 The Crab Feed

Chris Hatch thanked all the Durham Rotarians for supporting the Crab Feed.  The net income was around $11,500.  The gross income was $22,207.  339 tickets were sold and 315 dinners were served.  Chris estimated that we raised $2,000 more than a year ago at the Crab Feed.  The silent auction netted $4,500.   Chris suggested that Durham Rotarians host a BBQ at the Park for the Interact members to thank them for all the help they provided at the Crab Feed.

President Ryan explained that the picture of the baby being feed a can of beer that appeared in the “Rowel” was not his baby.  The picture of the baby with its grandmother was his baby.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Paul Harris

Dan Davis presented information about Paul Harris Fellow award and Rotary International Foundation.  Wayne Cooks was presented with the Paul Harris Fellow plaque and pin.  Wayne shared with the club members about being identified with Durham and his $200. Rotary Scholarship.  The Scholarship boosted his confidence and paid for four semesters of tuition at CSU, Chico.  It was a great psychological boost.  Wayne noted that there is accountability in Durham.  Everyone knows the good you do and everyone knows the bad you do.

Student of the Month

Roy Ellis presented Student of the Month plaques to Daniela Sanchez-Palacios and Chris Giuffré.   Chris introduced Daniela to Durham Rotarians and Daniela introduced Chris to the Club members.

Paradise Club Crab Feed Event

Ryan asked Jim Kirks about the Paradise Rotary Crab Feed to be held on Feb. 4th at the Paradise Veterans Hall at Elliott Road and the Skyway.  Jim responded that the tickets are $60 per person and Durham Rotarians should contact Asst. Dist. 5160 Gov. Brian Gray at Gray Matter Computing or past Asst. Dist. 5160 Gov. Pam Gray.  There were only 13 tickets available when Jim bought his tickets.  Pres. Ryan was agreeable to car pooling to the Paradise Crab Feed from Chico Nissan Hyundai.

Corning Club Clam Chouder cook-off Event

Pres. Ryan asked Roy Ellis about the Clam Chowder Cook Off on Feburary 24th and 25th at Rolling Hills Casino sponsored by Corning Rotary.  Roy has volunteered to represent Durham Rotary because his wife knows how to cook clam chowder.

Program

Roy Ellis introduced Joleen Francis, our speaker for the evening.  Joleen is Director of Advancement for Enloe Medical Center, a not for profit community lead medical center.  Enloe will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013.

In 2011 there were 14,512 in hospital admissions and 42,012 emergency room visits.  With 2,300 employees, Enloe is the area’s largest private employer.

Enloe provided $95.6 million in charity care last year.  There was a $5.2 million investment in equipment.   The newest medical device is a truebeam linear accelerator.  It can rotate in a 360 degree arc around the patient in two minutes.  It leaves the surrounding tissue undamaged.

The new Magnolia Tower will open in summer 2012.  It doubles the size of the medical center campus.  Joleen showed a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate the construction of the tower.
