Ryan introduced Chuck Loshe and Mike Moran of the Chico Club.

Steve Greenwood introduced Dan Driscoll, Red Badge member and Mike Sohnrey a guest.

Jane had no one at her table except Bob Woods, the program for the evening, who technically was a guest.

Bill Apger introduced himself as a guest, explaining his guest’s business (see recognitions below).  Even though we hadn’t seen him in a while, it didn’t work, because someone remembered that he was a member.

NEXT MEETING

NOW PAY ATTENTION TO THIS

The next meeting is a Monday Night Football meeting.  The meeting is at  Mountain Mike’s Pizza at 1722 Mangrove Avenue, Chico.  It is MONDAY night, not Tuesday.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Board Meeting

At the Board of Directors Meeting before this week’s Club Meeting the Board approved the increase of members dues to $122 a year.  It was $100 per year, but our dues to Rotery International and the District total $122.  So the increase is just to cover the cost to the Club.  Members are billed twice a year for dues.  So the bill for the first half of 2010 will now be $61.

The Club has also sent $2,900 to cover the cost of four students at Camp Royal next June.

The Club will consider sponsoring some interact members in team car driving at Thunder Hill Raceway (Willows) in March.  The purpose is to teach safe driving and car handling.  The sponsor cost is $100 per student.  The team is five students.  (The above was what I got out of President Mike’s brief explanation.  I am uncertain of its accuracy.  He will be getting a more detailed explanation for me for a future Rowel).

Christmas Party

Dave Mulqueeney passed out invitations to the Club’s annual Christmas party.  They weren’t for you, because you can read about it here.  They were sealed in envelopes so that you could take them home to your spouses and significant others.  DO SO!  NOW!

Here is the information for you to read.  The Christmas Celebration will be on Tuesday, December 15, 2009.  Note that it will begin at 5:30 p.m., not the usual 6:00 p.m. of our normal meetings.  It will conclude at 9:15 p.m.

There will be no cost to members for the dinner.  The Club will absorb the cost.

There will be no silent auction this year.  Instead there will be an optional Gift Exchange.  If you want to participate then bring one gift ($20.00 value) per individual (if you come alone) or per couple (including one for your guest couples).  Each individual (who came alone) or couple will then be able to select a gift to take home.  However, after a gift has been selected, another individual (who came alone) or couple, who liked that gift, can take it from the one(s) who originally selected it, as their gift.  That can only happen twice.  The third one(s) to get it get to keep it.

There will also be a live auction of the three centerpieces.

Larry Bradley will lead singing Christmas Carols.  The High School orchestra will play.

This is a great opportunity to bring a guest or guest couple, to interest them to Rotary.  It does work.  We invited Norm and Tanis Larson many years ago, and look at what happened.

Crab Feed

The Crab Feed will be January 23, 2010.

Camp Royal Program Needs a Chairperson

Roy Ellis  needs a member to take over the Camp Royal Program.  He indicates that the interviews come at the same time as he is dealing with the scholarship interviews an he can no longer do both.  If you are interested call Roy.

RECOGNITIONS

President Mike  recognized Tom Vanella, in the amount of $5, for not wearing his badge.  He also recognized him for his birthday.  Tom elected to have the club sing so he contributed $7.

Steve Plume was recognized for his 11th Anniversary.  He contributed $11.

Bill Apger was recognized for the shocking advertizing he did when he tried to introduce himself as a guest.  He was also recognized for missing several meetings, two of which were while he was hunting.  He told a touching story of not shooting a young deer he came upon hiking down Deer Creek.  But in Wyoming he got an Elk.  Anyway a $90 contribution got him to be a double Bell Ringer.

Travis Edsall said he missed the last meeting because he was painting in Sierraville and staying at a rather rudimentary hotel, with little service.  He contributed $5.

PROGRAM

Jim Kirks presented Bob Woods, who has a degree in wildlife management, taught and has published a book.  He presented a slide show and talked about Ishi the last member of the Yahi, in turn the last surviving group of the Yana people of California, who lived in the Deer Creek and Mill Creek canyons northeast of Chico.

Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Ryan Sutton was present to win the drawing of that name.

Revised RI Strategic Plan gets back to basics

By Janis Young
Rotary International News -- 17 November 2009

The revised strategic plan includes three priorities, including supporting and strengthening clubs.

At its November meeting, the RI Board adopted a revised strategic plan that comprises three priorities, all of equal importance to Rotary’s future.

The priorities are:

  • Support and strengthen clubs.
  • Focus and increase humanitarian service.
  • Enhance public image and awareness.

Following a mandate from the Council on Legislation, the Board recently conducted a triennial review of the plan. This review included surveying 14,000 Rotarians worldwide about the organization’s priorities and holding focus groups to assess Rotary’s image in different countries.

In addition, the Strategic Planning Committee carried out a detailed analysis of Rotary’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges and considered its findings in relation to the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities.

The revised plan, effective July 2010, reflects the results of this research. For example, survey responses clearly linked membership growth to strong clubs, and external data indicated that opportunities for service and networking are Rotary’s greatest appeal.

The plan also unifies the strategic direction of RI and The Rotary Foundation by emphasizing the connection between clubs’ most popular service areas and the areas of focus in the Foundation’s Future Vision Plan.

Moving forward, the Strategic Planning Committee and the RI Board will continue to refine the goals attached to each priority and develop tactics for achieving and measuring success.

“The revised strategic plan focuses RI’s efforts on the clubs and getting back to basics,” says RI Director Thomas Thorfinnson. “RI’s main role should be supporting clubs and helping them to expand their service and publicize the accomplishments of their efforts.”
