Calvary Annual Meatball Dinner with Lutefisk.

A flyer was passed around announcing this event at the Calvary Lutheran Church on Decmeber 5, 2009 at 10 Concordia Lane, Oroville, Ca.  Tickets must be purchased in advance by mail to the church address.  Members of this Church support our Harvest Festival.

Camp Royal Program Needs a Chairperson

Roy Ellis  needs a member to take over the Camp Royal Program.  He indicates that the interviews come at the same time as he is dealing with the scholarship interviews an he can no longer do both.  If you are interested call Roy.

Trip To Monterey, Mexico to Deliver Wheelchairs

NOTE:  This is one of the things that Rolando Chavez talked about during the program on October 6th.

From Bradford R. Howard, Rotary District 5170 Governor, 2002-2003:

Since 2004, Rotarians from District 5160 and 5170 have been traveling to Monterrey, Mexico to deliver wheelchairs, support matching grants and create lasting friendships.  Almost 200 people have made this trip, and in the process this trip created many new “Rotarians.”  The purpose of this correspondence is to invite you, your club members to join this year’s reunion trip.

In January, 2010, were are going back to Monterrey to delivery wheelchairs, continue our humanitarian efforts and make new friends in Rotary.  The Rotary Club of Danville/Sycamore Valley (District 5160) has organized the trip and already signed up 20 people on the trip.  They have asked us to invite other Rotarians would like to join them and be a part of one of these experiences.  The basic information of the trip is:

Depart:  Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Return:  Sunday, January 17, 2010

Cost of Program:  $1,539, double occupancy – which includes roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, all meals, wheelchair delivery, sightseeing, Rotary events, etc.

Attached is a PDF file that will give you all of the information about the trip (dates, time, cost, etc.)  If you, or members of your club would like to join us, simply complete the enclosed application and return it to my office with a deposit and we will help you the rest of the way.

This is an extraordinary experience, filed with emotion, purpose and tremendous international fellowship.  As a club president, you can change the lives of people in your community and throughout the world.  But the greatest effect you can have is to change the lives of your members.  Involvement in Rotary gives the ordinary Rotarian extraordinary opportunities to do things that they could never do unless they were in Rotary, and it will get them more deeply involved in your club.

In addition to the delivery of wheelchairs, we will spend time, one on one, with the Monterrey Rotarians in their homes and in their communities to see the service and experience fellowship that only Rotary can bring.  Since we began making these trips, more than 30 matching grant projects have been completed.  A wonderful part of this process is that the Rotarians can put someone into a chair and see how they respond as their life is changed. We invite you and the members of your club to join us.

Although the majority of funds have been raised for this container of wheelchairs, if your club would like to partially sponsor a container, you could have YOUR members deliver the chairs YOUR club funded.  Please announce this program in your club, and encourage two or three of your members to take a trip of a lifetime, and represent your club.  Ideally, you should make the trip and ask some of your members to join you!

RECOGNITIONS

President-Elect Jim let all know about his approach to recognitions.  He started by recognizing all the winners of last week’s football pool.

Steve Plume contributed $20 for having won the First Quarter.

Travis Edsall contributed $10 for winning the Third Quarter.

But President-Elect Jim didn’t contribute for winning the Second Quarter.  He also couldn’t fine the winner of the Fourth Quarter, who wasn’t here.

Jim Patterson was recognized for his birthday.  He contributed $10 to have Jane and The Three Dans sing.  Dan Driscoll, Dan Davis, Dan Davey and Jane sang.  They were pretty good.  Catchy name for a group.  Maybe they should go on tour.

President Elect Jim recognized Dave Jessen for missing the last meeting and for his 16th grandchild, however the Grinder protected him from any contribution.

Dar Meyer contributed $10 (I forgot what for).

Roy Ellis and Craig Hastain each contributed $10 for missing the last meeting.

Steve Greenwood also contributed for missing the last meeting but went to $20 to become a Bell Ringer.

Glenn Pulliam also missed the last meeting but went to $17 to become a Bell Ringer.

Jane Ziad was recognized for missing the last meeting because she was in Canada for 10 days.  She contributed $25 to become a double Bell Ringer.

Phil Price was recognized for missing the last meeting.  President-Elect never asked him where he was.  However, because he was in Las Vegas for 6 days, he contributed $50.

Ryan Sutton missed the last meeting and sold 2 cars.  He contributed $60.

PROGRAM

Jane Ziad presented Brad Montgomery, Executive Director of the Chico Community Shelter Partnership which operates the Torres Shelter.  He spoke about the shelter, its operation and the people it serves.  He talked about last year’s financial crisis which the shelter has now survived.  He answered members many questions about the shelter.

He also noted that classical pianist Mark Ryan Friedman will give a free piano recital, on November 21st at 7 p.m., at the Faith Lutheran Church, which is on First Avenue in Chico.  Donations will go to the shelter.

Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Travis Edsall was present to win the drawing of that name.

Laying the groundwork for lasting peace

Rotary International News -- 4 November 2009

Kouame Remi Oussou (third from left) during his days as a Rotary World Peace Fellow at International Christian University. A former member of the Rotaract Club of Abidjan Cocody, Côte d'Ivoire, he says he would like to become a Rotarian. Photo courtesy of Kouame Remi Oussou

The civil war that tore apart Kouame Remi Oussou's homeland of Côte d'Ivoire instilled in him a passion to work for solutions to conflict.

Although most of the violence, which broke out in 2002, ended in 2004, the war left his country divided in two.

Oussou is now a monitoring and evaluation officer for disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Central African Republic. His work helps address the needs of a country that weathered periodic civil conflict before a comprehensive peace accord took effect in 2007.

"DDR remains a process," says Oussou, the first polio survivor to become a Rotary World Peace Fellow. "It takes tremendous time to get the D and D done before even thinking of the R part."

Conducting socioeconomic studies is the focal point of the DDR team's efforts.

"One of my roles is to think in advance how the ex-combatants will be making a living after disarmament and demobilization," says Oussou, who is fluent in Baule, English, French, German, and Spanish. "We are a quite sturdy team, in the firing line of conflicting interests, including the Central African Republic government, the politico-military leaders, and UNDP itself."

Oussou says his parents told him that he contracted polio when he was one or two years old. But he has "long had a strong feeling that with hard work, handicap or not, anyone can succeed."

Oussou's studies as a 2007-09 Rotary World Peace Fellow at International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo helped prepare him for his work in the Central African Republic. His applied field experience with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research office in Hiroshima was especially helpful: It gave him the opportunity to conduct research and help organize a joint conference of the institute and UNESCO on nuclear energy, where he also delivered a presentation.

"I could not be more thankful to Rotary International and ICU for providing me with such a great opportunity to contribute to the debate over peace and security in Africa and the world," he says.
