Dan Driscoll, doing his first introduction, introduced guests Casey Sohnrey, Travis Edsel and Floyd Miller.  He also introduce Terry Allread of the Chico Club.  Dan was asked to contribute $15 for some problems in his introductions.  At this point in got so noisy that I am not sure of the names, but at the next table Micheal Bury of the Chico Club was introduced along with guests Kirk and Rhonda Michael and Jim Gabner.  There was also a member of the Paradise Club whose name I believe was Fred.

NEXT MEETING

Next Tuesday will be the visit of a Group Study Exchange (GSE) team from Monterey, Mexico. They are firemen and paramedics.  Mike Bury of the Chico Club spoke briefly tonight about the visit.   They will visit the CalFire station at Forest Ranch, the Antelope paramedics, the Butte College Fire Training class, the Durham Volunteer Fire Station and they will have breakfast at a Chico Fire Station.  They will also visit a rice field and finish up at the Sierra Nevada Brewery.  In between they will visit the Chico Rotary Club and our Club.

President Mike will be present at the Durham Volunteer Fire Station at the time of the visit, next Tuesday, at 4:00 pm.  He invites all members to join him.

Trip To Monterey Mexico to Deliver Wheelchairs

From Bradford R. Howard, Rotary District 5170 Governor, 2002-2003:

Since 2004, Rotarians from District 5160 and 5170 have been traveling to Monterrey, Mexico to deliver wheelchairs, support matching grants and create lasting friendships.  Almost 200 people have made this trip, and in the process this trip created many new “Rotarians.”  The purpose of this correspondence is to invite you, your club members to join this year’s reunion trip.

In January, 2010, were are going back to Monterrey to delivery wheelchairs, continue our humanitarian efforts and make new friends in Rotary.  The Rotary Club of Danville/Sycamore Valley (District 5160) has organized the trip and already signed up 20 people on the trip.  They have asked us to invite other Rotarians would like to join them and be a part of one of these experiences.  The basic information of the trip is:

Depart:  Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Return:  Sunday, January 17, 2010

Cost of Program:  $1,539, double occupancy – which includes roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, all meals, wheelchair delivery, sightseeing, Rotary events, etc.

Attached is a PDF file that will give you all of the information about the trip (dates, time, cost, etc.)  If you, or members of your club would like to join us, simply complete the enclosed application and return it to my office with a deposit and we will help you the rest of the way.

This is an extraordinary experience, filed with emotion, purpose and tremendous international fellowship.  As a club president, you can change the lives of people in your community and throughout the world.  But the greatest effect you can have is to change the lives of your members.  Involvement in Rotary gives the ordinary Rotarian extraordinary opportunities to do things that they could never do unless they were in Rotary, and it will get them more deeply involved in your club.

In addition to the delivery of wheelchairs, we will spend time, one on one, with the Monterrey Rotarians in their homes and in their communities to see the service and experience fellowship that only Rotary can bring.  Since we began making these trips, more than 30 matching grant projects have been completed.  A wonderful part of this process is that the Rotarians can put someone into a chair and see how they respond as their life is changed. We invite you and the members of your club to join us.

Although the majority of funds have been raised for this container of wheelchairs, if your club would like to partially sponsor a container, you could have YOUR members deliver the chairs YOUR club funded.  Please announce this program in your club, and encourage two or three of your members to take a trip of a lifetime, and represent your club.  Ideally, you should make the trip and ask some of your members to join you!

Harvest Festival Awards

Jim Kirks, the Harvest Festival Raffle Ticket Chairperson, presented the Second Prize of $500 to Raffle winner Jim Gabner.

He then called Bill Apger to present the First Prize, which he had donated. It was a week in Cabo.   He presented it to winners Kirk and Rhonda Michael.

Jim then called up Tom Knowles to present the Grand Prize, which he donated.  It was a flight to Shelter Cove and a three day stay.  Tom presented it to the winner Casey Sohnrey.

Paul Harris

Steve Plume was presented, by President Mike, with the Paul Harris membership for Cynthia Plume.  Thanks to Steve for the contributions to the Paul Harris Foundation.

RECOGNITIONS

President Mike tried to recognize several members for things they were recognized for during his absence on September 1st.  But he did get a contribution from Steve Plume in the amount of $20 for his birthday, after the club, led by Bill Apger, sang “Happy Birthday” to him.

Chris Hatch volunteered $41 for his 41st anniversary.

Sergeant at Arms Kent Jackson assessed President Mike $20 for not being in the picture of members at the storage lockers following the Harvest Festival.

PROGRAM

The program was a Club Assembly.

Dan Davis reported that, due to weather, the economy and competition, attendance, and hence, proceeds for the Harvest Festival this year was down from prior years.  He doesn’t have the final figures yet it appears that we made $3,400 from the raffle, $13,900 from the concessions, $3,500 from the car show and $4,150 from the sponsors.

Jim Kirks, Community Service Chairperson reported consideration of a computer program for schools to help with students with learning disabilities.  It will probably cost about $500 and require members donating time in the schools.

Andy Farrar, International Service Chairperson reported giving $750 debit cards to the sisters for use on their trip to Peru.

Jim Patterson, Membership Chairperson, discussed further efforts to improve membership.  It was suggested that we have another membership meeting where we invite prospective members.  It was also suggested that we look at the parent of scholarship winners.

Roy Ellis, Vocational Service Chairperson, discussed the youth programs and his need for a chairperson for the Camp Royal program (see above).

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Jim Kirks was present to win the drawing of that name.
