This meeting
was a Club visitation to Chico Rotary to listen to Past Rotary International
President Rick King. For the details of
the meeting members are referred to the Oakleaves publication for the meeting. The Oakleaves is the Chico Rotary
newsletter. Sort of the equivalent of
the Rowel, but done a little more formally. This would
be a good time for members to become acquainted with how other clubs operate by
reading their newsletters. The Oakleaves
is found at Chico Rotary’s website:
www.chicorotary.com. Then click on “Oakleaves” next to the bottom
on the menu on the left side of the page.
The As to Rick
King’s speech, James Kirk took extensive notes which are below. |

The Board of Directors has voted to approve Floyd Miller as
a new member of Durham Rotary. He is
proposed by his son, Bruce Miller. Floyd
is formerly a member of Chico Rotary. K.
R. suggested that his classification be:
‘The Glass Man”. However, Dan
Davis indicated that such would not fit within Rotary classifications. So his classification is yet to be

PROGRAM
Thanks to
Jim Kirks for the follow report on Rick King’s speech to
Past
Rotary International President Rick King inspired us by giving examples of how Rotary is more than showing up for meetings and paying
fines. Rotary was the first service club
and its goal is to have different professions represented in its membership.
"Mankind
is our business" was King's theme for his year as Rotary International
President and continues to be his theme. King recalled that he had a special tie made
with his theme on it to give to dignitaries that he met during his Presidential
Year. When he gave a tie to the President of Taiwan, the President of Taiwan in
turn gave me a $5 million check for Rotary's Polio Plus campaign.
King
envisioned that with Rotary 100 years old, the organization needed
revitalization and change as Rotary was slowing losing membership. Rotarians and their Rotary Clubs were getting
older. King chose as his theme animal,
the eagle as it has the ability to see for miles. Helen Keller when asked what
is worse than being blind, responded "Having
sight and no vision." An eagle will
fly into a storm and continue until it reaches its destination. And finally an eagle understands the need for
change. It takes five months for a 40
year old eagle to remove and grow a new beak, remove and grow new talons and
remove and grow new wing feathers. If
the eagle didn't renew itself, it would die as it couldn't eat, couldn't catch
prey, and couldn't fly with it old beak, old talons and old wing feathers.
Rick King
presented Rotary eagle pins to two exchange students Anna Maria, from
When 9/11
occurred, Rick King received messages from world leaders asking what is Rotary going to do about global terror? King noted that where Rotary exists, there is
less disease, less thirst, less hunger, more hope, more life, and more peace. Rotarians do God's will on Earth. An example was Rotary replacing boxes at dumps
as homes for widows in sub-Saharan
Through
youth, Interact, and other programs, 34,000 Rotary clubs are trying to make the
human race better for the 21st century.
What's in
Rotary for you? Rotary always asks for some of our time King gave the example
of medical equipment donated by a Rotary Club that kept a Rotarian's infant
granddaughter alive.
The miracle
of Rotary is that we benefit the best. It always comes back. What we do is important as it changes us more
than it changes others. Are you in
Rotary or is Rotary in you?
