Craig Hastain is working on what should be an interesting program.  He had a program worked out for September 8th, when he thought that was the next meeting.  It was to be about a bomb robot.  However, when it turned out that it was the 8th not the 1st that we would not have a meeting, at program was not available for the 1st, so he is working on another one.  The bomb robot will be scheduled at a later time.

HARVEST FESTIVAL REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

A Harvest Festival Committee Meeting

There will be a Harvest Festival Committee Meeting on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at 7:00am. It will be at the Italian Cottage on the Skyway.  This is a must for all committee chairpersons.  All other members interested or with questions or comments may attend.

Harvest Festival Work Schedule

The work schedule for the Harvest Festival is at the end of this Rowel.  It is important that each of you appear at your scheduled time for your work assignment.  Because of our limited membership we do not have members to cover for anyone who misses his/her assignment.

Harvest Festival Sponsorships

It is still not too late to get sponsors signed up.  It is now too late to get them on the T-Shirts, because they are now being printed.  But sponsors can still they can get a banner and the rest of the items available, depending on which level they sign up for, so do it now for the ones you are the responsible contact person.  Don’t limit your self to those who have sponsored in the past.  Contact anyone who comes to mind.  This is where a substantial part of our profit comes from.

Raffle Tickets

Jim Kirks has distributed the Durham Rotary Harvest Festival Raffle tickets, in packets of 10, to each member.  If you haven’t received yours, see Jim.  He has them.  You do not avoid your obligation to sell them or buy them yourself by not picking them up from Jim.  All not sold must be turned in at the September 1st meeting, so they are available to sell at the Festival.  If they are not turned in on that date, you will be billed for them.  Please note that all checks for Durham Rotary Harvest Festival Raffle tickets should have the following payee:  “Durham Rotary Harvest Festival”.

Group Study Exchange

A Group Study Exchange (GSE) team is arriving from Monterey, Mexico. They are firemen and paramedics.  They would like to meet with members of the Durham Volunteer Fire Department.  If anyone has a contact, please let President Mike know.  They will be attending our October 6th meeting. Chico Sunrise Rotary Club is looking for interesting things for the GSE to learn and do while in the area. Durham Rotarians were invited to contact Pres. Mike about things the GSE could do in our area.   Mike is working on having the Sunrise Club meet with us on October 6th  if they can stay up that late.

Past International President to Speak at Chico Rotary

Past Pres. Glenn, in June, while he was still president, urged all Durham Rotarians to hear former RI President Rick King when he speaks to the Chico Noon Rotary Club on Tuesday, September 22nd.   The Board of Directors voted to make this a meeting of record.

District Visioning Program

President Mike is proposing that Durham Rotary participate in a District Visioning program entitled Vision 2010 on October 27, 2009.  The District Visioning Team will be here.  The meeting will begin at 5:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm.

As I understand it, District Visioning Team is lead by Past District Governor, Candy Pierce.  She describes it as follows:  “A team of 3-4 volunteers from throughout the District will descend on Durham to facilitate a visioning process. Approximately 15-20 club members will participate and the mix should be: past and present leaders, future leaders, new members. The process lasts approximately 4 hours and in that time, the members of the club who participate will go through a series of exercises and at the end of the evening, will define a 5 year vision for the Rotary Club of Durham. Then the fun really begins as the visioning members take the program back to the club for strategic planning to achieve the defined vision.”

RECOGNITIONS

President Mike recognized Dave Mulqueeney for his birthday.  He contributed $10 to avoid a song.  Steve Greenwood offered to do the same for his birthday, but after a discussion about his new truck and his week at Sun River, he contributed $60.  Daryl Polk also had a birthday.  He contributed $10 to avoid a song plus $10 for something else that I failed to note.  Ryan Sutton contributed $10 for reporting the end of the “Cash for Clunkers” program.  Mike Wacker and Bruce Miller each missed meetings, but reported that they would make up.  Chris Hatch said that he would not make up and so contributed $10 for missing the last meeting.

Sergeant at Arms Kent Jackson recognized President Mike for not having him listed as the Sergeant at Arms on the Club’s website.  Mike contributed $10

The Board of Directors met briefly after the meeting.  They voted to approve Floyd Miller as a new member of Durham Rotary.  He is proposed by his son, Bruce Miller.  Floyd is formerly a member of Chico Rotary.  K. R. suggested that his classification be:  ‘The Glass Man”.  However, Dan Davis indicated that such would not fit within Rotary classifications.  So his classification is yet to be determined.

PROGRAM

Clint Goss introduced Bob Julian.  Bob is the project manager for renovations being done by the American Legion Post to the Durham Memorial Hall.  The first phase has been completed.  The Kitchen has been enlarged by moving the wall 9 feet into the main room.  The meeting room has similarly been enlarged by moving the wall 9 feet into the entryway.  Air Conditioning has been added to the meeting room.  They do not believe that the expansion of the kitchen will reduce the capacity to feed people in the main room.  The Durham Park and Recreation District has no money to finance this project so the American Legion has been raising the money to do so.  The cost of phase one was about $80,000.  They had raised $30,000 and so borrowed $50,000 to do the project.  They are now seeking donations to repay the loan.

Phase 2 includes air conditioning, lowering the ceiling to improve the acoustics and new lighting in the main hall.  (Jim Patterson volunteered Norm Larson to test the acoustics when that is finished).  Phase 3 includes insulation on the walls on the sunny sides of the building.

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Dave Jessen was not present to win the drawing of that name.
