DURHAM ROTARY HISTORY

Rian Farley sent us the following excerpt about Durham Rotary, which will appear in her new book “Durham Street Names and Place Names” (tentative publication date: Mar/Apr 2010).

She also thinks that we should celebrate Durham Rotary's 65th anniversary this next spring.  She suggests that:  “A big dinner would be great ... invite the whole town (but make 'em pay!)”.

Durham Rotary Seeks Rotary Charter At Dinner Meeting”

Durham , April 5. – Forty business men and guests met Tuesday evening for dinner in I.O.O.F. social hall to discuss the organization of a permanent service club for the Durham district.  A.M. Strong opened the meeting and introduced Joe Mead who in turn presented the special guests from Chico Rotary club.

“It was voted to apply for a charter in Rotary International and until the provisional chapter is formally admitted to membership, it will complete its organization, meeting every Monday at 8 p.m. in I.O.O.F. hall.

“Officers elected were Joe Mead, president, Gene Ray, vice president; Ray Duer, secretary-treasurer and Albert Strong, G.W. Sitton, E.G. England and Gerald Russell directors.”  [ Chico Enterprise, Thursday, March 5, 1945 , pg 3.]

Durham Rotary was officially chartered on Friday, May 18, 1945 .  The dinner, served to the members and guests for the charter evening, prepared by Mrs. Sarah Franklin included Cole Slaw, Chicken and Noodles, Sweet Potatoes, String Beans, Sliced Tomatoes, Tea Rolls, Apple Pie and Coffee.  Other charter members were: Charles Calkins, J.W. DeLapp, James Leister, Charles Schab, Wesley Sitton, O.E. Tracy, Walter Wageman, James Monk, Alva Fenn, M.C. Grant, Emory Liston, L.W. Pray, Charles A. Thompson, Wiley Wahl, Sr., Walter L. Owings, Nels A. Christensen, Louis Edwards, Mel French, Woodrow Estes, and Wes Cole. [Program: Charter Night, Durham Club, May 18, 1945 .]

The 65-year history of Durham Rotary in Durham in 2010, also shows multiple years of well-led projects: Sidewalks at Durham Elementary (1965-1966); Putney Street (1984); Parking lot at the Memorial Hall (1987), which was co-sponsored by Durham American Legion Post 673; and the Canopy at Community Park (1987).  Finally, 31-member strong group of individuals continues the now 30-year tradition of Rotary’s Harvest Festival, which funds the multiple-year and multiple recipient scholarships to graduates of Durham High School .

(It should be noted that Jim Patterson helped Rian with dates in the last paragraph)

At the end of this Rowel is a list of other books Rian has published in the last few years.  She says she does this just to stay busy .... and, to keeps Rick from having to spend big $$ on psychoanalysis bills.

NEXT MEETING

Clint Goss is working on what should be an interesting program if he gets confirmation.

HARVEST FESTIVAL REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Harvest Festival Sponsorships

Glenn Pulliam reminded the members to get the Harvest Festival Sponsors signed up.  He noted that letters were sent out to past sponsors.  Glenn Pulliam previously passed around the list of those to whom the letters were sent.  He asked that members report any corrections or any businesses that are out of business and should be deleted.

Glenn indicated that Steve needed to know by Wednesday (8/19) to get the names on the T-Shirts.  So it is now too late to get on the T-Shirts.  The T-Shirts are now being printed.  Still they can get the rest, depending on which level they sign up for, so do it now for the ones you are the responsible contact person.  But don’t limit your self to those who have sponsored in the past.  Contact anyone who comes to mind.  This is where a substantial part of our profit comes from.

Raffle Tickets

Jim Kirks distributed the Durham Rotary Harvest Festival Raffle tickets, in packets of 10, to each member.  You can sell them or buy them yourself.  All not sold must be turned in at the September 1st meeting, so they are available to sell at the Festival.  If they are not turned in on that date, you will be billed for them.  Please note that all checks for Durham Rotary Harvest Festival Raffle tickets should have the following payee:  “Durham Rotary Harvest Festival”.

Group Study Exchange

A Group Study Exchange (GSE) team is arriving from Monterey, Mexico. They are firemen and paramedics.  They would like to meet with members of the Durham Volunteer Fire Department.  If anyone has a contact, please let President Mike know.  They will be attending our October 6th meeting. Chico Sunrise Rotary Club is looking for interesting things for the GSE to learn and do while in the area. Durham Rotarians were invited to contact Pres. Mike about things the GSE could do in our area.   Mike is working on having the Sunrise Club meet with us on October 6th  if they can stay up that late.

Past International President to Speak at Chico Rotary

Past Pres. Glenn, in June, while he was still president, urged all Durham Rotarians to hear former RI President Rick King when he speaks to the Chico Noon Rotary Club on Tuesday, September 22nd.   The Board of Directors voted to make this a meeting of record.

District Visioning Program

President Mike is proposing that Durham Rotary participate in a District Visioning program entitled Vision 2010 on October 27, 2009.  The District Visioning Team will be here.  The meeting will begin at 5:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm.

As I understand it, District Visioning Team is lead by Past District Governor, Candy Pierce.  She describes it as follows:  “A team of 3-4 volunteers from throughout the District will descend on Durham to facilitate a visioning process. Approximately 15-20 club members will participate and the mix should be: past and present leaders, future leaders, new members. The process lasts approximately 4 hours and in that time, the members of the club who participate will go through a series of exercises and at the end of the evening, will define a 5 year vision for the Rotary Club of Durham. Then the fun really begins as the visioning members take the program back to the club for strategic planning to achieve the defined vision.”

RECOGNITIONS

President Mike recognized Andy Farrar for his 52nd in the amount of $52.  He also recognized him for missing a meeting while traveling around the west, including Flathead Lake.  He contributed an additional $20.

President Mike tried to recognize Glenn Pulliam for his birthday, but Glenn pointed out that his birthday is on May 27th not in August as the calendar indicates.

Dave Mulqueeney contributed $41 for his 41st Anniversary.

Dar Meyer was asked about missing the meeting last week and about changes at UBS.  He explained about Stifel-Nicolaus having purchased the Chico UBS office.  By the time he got done (since that explanation might be considered advertising), he made a deal with President Glenn to contribute $100 to the Durham Rotary Foundation.

Dave Jessen contributed $40 for the “demand letter” Durham Rotary received from the Midway Mini Storage for keys to the Clubs padlocks.

Ryan Sutton contributed $5 for exchanging his Red Badge for a Blue Badge and $10 for his program, which had elements of advertizing.  Andy Farrar paid the $10 for him, having agreed to cover it, if his program got him recognized.

PROGRAM

Craig Hastain, Club Program Chairman, announced that the final Meeting and Program Schedule has been prepared.  He distributed it to the members.  Look at it.  There have been some changes.  Even though it is the “final” draft, I overheard two members exchanging dates later in the fall.  I hope that information gets to Craig and me.

While waiting for Ryan to arrive, President Mike discussed the County’s Water-Draught Task Force and the fact that well water levels, while low, are actually up from last year.

Ryan Sutton introduced himself as the program for the night.  He explained the “Cash for Clunkers” program.  He discussed the problems in getting sales approved and then getting the money from the Government.  He explained how they are required to destroy the engines of the “Clunkers” being traded in.  He also discussed the problems expected in the future for car dealers when the program ends.

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Steve Greenwood was present to win the drawing of that name.
