VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Daryl Polk was asked to introduce the visiting Rotarians at his table.  There was only one other person at his table, but it was Georgie Bellin of the Chico Club.  Kent Jackson had no visiting Rotarians at his table, so we all paid $1 each.  Jane Ziad  introduced Red Badge member Craig Hastain.  Jim Patterson introduced Red Badge members Dan Davey and Dan Driscoll.

NEXT MEETING

The original draft of the meeting schedule has Chris Hatch as the program person of August 11th.  The revision just emailed to me has Roy Ellis.  But Chris Hatch has announced that he will have Wally Herger here to speak to Durham Rotarians on August 11th.  So I guess it is still Chris.

Chris is hoping that we will have a good turn out for Wally's presentation.  President Mike has declared the meeting a spouses/significant others meeting.  So, invite your wife or significant other.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

BOARD MEETING

The Board of Directors met at 5:00 pm, before this week’s meeting.  They discussed the club participating in the Visioning Program.  The Paradise Club recently went through it.  President Mike is going to try to get someone from the Paradise Club to come down and tell us about it.

Rotoplast Fundraiser at the Ball Park

The August 15th Chico Outlaws vs. Tucson Toros game at Nettleton Stadium will be a fund raiser for Rotoplast.  Ticket Vouchers are $11 for Stadium Seating.  Tailgate at 6:00 pm and the first pitch at 7:05 pm.  Contact Brenda Austin Petersen at humdingr25@comcast.net for more information.

Bill Apger’s Open House

It was announced that Bill Apger is having an open house at his new office, on August 20, 2009.  Chris Mulqueeney will be doing the ribbon cutting for the Chamber of Commerce.  All are invited.  The office is in the office complex at 250 Vallombrosa Avenue.  Chris didn’t have the Suite #, but will get it.  Bill, this plus the missed meetings and the missed program will cost you.  Actually, Jim Patterson has an invocation that he needs you present to give.  He has pointed that out for several weeks.

Harvest Festival Sponsorships

President Mike reminded the members to get the Harvest Festival Sponsors signed up.  He noted that letters were sent out to past sponsors.  The letters still need to be followed up on.  So do it now for the ones you are the responsible contact person.  But don’t limit your self to those who have sponsored in the past.  Contact anyone who comes to mind.  This is where a substantial part of our profit comes from.

District 5160 Conference

The annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

Group Study Exchange

A Group Study Exchange (GSE) team is arriving from Monterey, Mexico. They are firemen and paramedics.  They would like to meet with members of the Durham Volunteer Fire Department.  If anyone has a contact, please let President Mike know.  They will be attending our October 6th meeting. Chico Sunrise Rotary Club is looking for interesting things for the GSE to learn and do while in the area. Durham Rotarians were invited to contact Pres. Mike about things the GSE could do in our area.   Mike is working on having the Sunrise Club meet with us on October 6th  if they can stay up that late.

Past International President to Speak at Chico Rotary

Past Pres. Glenn, in June, while he was still president (is this all right Dave and Tom?), urged all Durham Rotarians to hear former RI President Rick King when he speaks to the Chico Noon Rotary Club on Tuesday, September 22nd.   The Board of Directors voted to make this a meeting of record.

River Cats Rotary Night

Past Pres. Glenn, in June, while he was still president, also shared that there will be Rotary International night at the River Cats game on August 9th.  This is a Polio Plus fund raiser.

District Visioning Program

President Mike announced that Durham Rotary will be participating in a District Visioning program entitled Vision 2010 on October 27, 2009.  The District Visioning Team will be here.  The meeting will begin at 5:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm.  As I understand it, District Visioning Team is lead by Past District Governor, Candy Pierce.  She describes it as follows:  “A team of 3-4 volunteers from throughout the District will descend on Durham to facilitate a visioning process. Approximately 15-20 club members will participate and the mix should be: past and present leaders, future leaders, new members. The process lasts approximately 4 hours and in that time, the members of the club who participate will go through a series of exercises and at the end of the evening, will define a 5 year vision for the Rotary Club of Durham. Then the fun really begins as the visioning members take the program back to the club for strategic planning to achieve the defined vision.”

Glenn Medical Foundation Fund Raiser

Willows Rotary contacted President Mike about a fund raiser to be held at the Cal Worthington Ranch as a fund raiser for the Glenn Medical Foundation.  The cost is $125 per plate.  If interested, contact President Mike for further details.

RECOGNITIONS

President Mike first recognized K. R. Robertson for his birthday.  He elected a song by the club, which he got, and paid $10 for it.  Then President Mike asked him where he was the last two weeks.  He reported that he was vacationing at Northstar with his family, and a black bear who tried to come in the window of their condo.  That cost him an additional $40.

President Mike then asked Glenn Pulliam why he missed two meeting.  Glenn reported visiting his son in New York City and sleeping on the floor of the living room, without air conditioning, while their son had air conditioning in his bedroom.  Glenn contributed $25.  President Glenn also delivered to Glenn the certificate recently presented at the District meeting for Glenn’s achievements in membership during his presidency.  Jim Patterson claimed that he was the membership chair.  Glenn gave him the certificate, but Jim gave it back.

Norm Larson reported that he missed the last 3 meeting due to the Comanche Ride and then a second ride with Roy Ellis and their wives.  He also announced that his Pa’s Pluot stand is open.  He contributed $40.

Dan Driscoll also missed a meeting.

Roy Ellis contributed for missing a meeting to go on the horse ride with Norm and their wives.  He contributed $25.

Bruce Miller missed last week’s meeting because he was in Seattle on a “working trip”.  At least the plan was to visit a glass distributor, but they never made it.  He contributed $35.

Jane Ziad missed last week’s meeting because she was busy working on Girl Scout projects.  She contributed $10.

Sergeant at Arms, Kent Jackson then assessed President Mike $15 for there being no program tonight.  It was the “buck stops here” rational.

Red Badge members Craig Hastain and Dan Davey each received their Blue Badges, contributing $5 each.  Craig then contributed and additional $10 for Bill Apger failing to arrive with a program tonight.  Dan contributed an additional $10 for having visiting grandchildren.

The Grinder was then auctioned.  Steve Plume got it for only $45.

PROGRAM

There was none.  Bill Apger missed the meeting and providing the program he was in charge of.

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Glenn Pulliam was present to win the drawing of that name.

Reach One, Keep One

The RI Board of Directors adopted a new membership slogan, "Each Rotarian: Reach One, Keep One," at its June meeting.

The slogan emphasizes the need for Rotarians to focus on both recruitment and retention in their membership growth efforts.

"Membership development is each Rotarian's responsibility," said Paul Netzel, a member of RI's Membership Development and Retention Committee and a past RI director.

"'Reach One' reminds us that because Rotary membership is by invitation, it's essential that each Rotarian reaches out and invites someone to join," added Netzel, a member of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles.

"'Keep One' reminds us that it's not sufficient to simply sponsor someone into Rotary; we must also see that new members become active and involved Rotarians. We know this is an essential element in membership retention."

The new slogan complements the Board's long-term membership strategy, which was also adopted at the June meeting.

Member sponsor and retention recognition

At its January meeting, the RI Board adopted a New Member Sponsor and Retention Recognition program, which became effective 1 July. The program, also part of the long-term membership strategy, allows Rotary club presidents to nominate and recognize individuals for sponsoring new members while focusing on retention. There are several award categories:

  • Gold pin and certificate: For Rotarians bringing 25 members into any Rotary club, with 20 still active after six years
  • Silver pin and certificate: For Rotarians bringing 10 members into any Rotary club, with eight still active after four years
  • Bronze pin and certificate: For Rotarians bringing five members into any Rotary club, with four still active after two years
