Pres. Glenn
again urged all Durham Rotarians to hear former RI President Rick King when he
speaks to the Chico Noon Rotary Club on Tuesday, September 22nd.
The Board of Directors voted to make this a meeting of record.
River Cats Rotary Night
Pres. Glenn shared that there will be Rotary International night at the River
Cats game on August 9th. This is a Polio
Plus fund raiser.
RECOGNITIONS
Dan Driscoll was called upon and asked when his birthday is.
After a while Dan admitted his 60th birthday was in July and Dan chose no song.
Chris Hatch was called on as he wasn't present last week. It
turns out the grandchildren came to visit from
Bruce Miller missed several meetings. Bruce has been
out-of-state, but made up the missed meetings.
Daryle Polk was recognized for $10 for
missing last week's meeting.
Past President Glenn and his wife Bonnie camped at
Jane Ziad announced that all three
sons have now graduated from college. Jane was recognized for $30 for the three
sons completing their degree programs.
Dan Davis was called on as Pres. Mike had been told that Dan
had helped the Orland Rotary Club very much. Dan was recognized for $10.
When Pres. Mike resumed the podium, after the program, he
asked Chris Hatch if he heard a cell phone ring. Chris was recognized for $5
and reported that the emergency had not been resolved even after receiving two
cell phone calls.
PROGRAM
Steve Greenwood presented information about the Harvest
Festival. September 13th is fast approaching. Fundraising booths are limited to
Durham Rotarians are to park in the baseball field. 30-40
spaces near the main entrance are needed for handicapped parking in the front
area.
Sponsorships produce $8,000 to $10,000. Steve Greenwood has
a draft work schedule. If your name is listed twice, it is intentional. There
will be a cell phone list and walkie talkies to help
improve communication.
Captain Bob's Pancake Wagon brings all the breakfast stuff.
If we get breakfast items donated, it would help improve the fundraising.
Otherwise the Club pays over $1000 to the Sheriff's department for the
breakfast supplies.
In-kind donations are welcome. Pro Pacific has donated
lettuce and other items. They also lend us a refrigerated truck to store things
at the Harvest Festival.
The Tri-Tip and hot dog lunch will be under the direction of
Roy Ellis. Bruce Miller is handling the beverages. Clint Goss will do barrel
roasted chicken.
Steve Greenwood plans to ask Ryan Sutton to handle parking
since Ryan is always moving cars around.
Orange construction fencing was very helpful at last year's
Harvest Festival to keep the public out of the "back area". Rotarians
suggested that more orange fencing would be helpful for the 2009 Harvest
Festival.
Dan Davis and Mike Wacker will
head up the cashiers.
Complimentary food tickets are given to Interact, Boy Scouts
and Community Band members who volunteer at the Festival.
Dave and Chris Mulqueeney will
head up the crafts faire.
Chris Hatch is printing raffle tickets. Shelter Cove
vacation was last year's grand prize. Ged
won the prize and enjoyed the quiet and read some books. Chris Hatch will work
with Jim Kirks on the raffle. Jim Kirks is to call Tom Knowles about Shelter
Cove and Chris Hatch will call Bill Apger about his
condo in
Andy Farrar has constructed booths for beverage service,
raffle ticket sales, etc.
The Early V-8 Club will be asked to sell raffle tickets
prior to the Harvest Festival, not at the Harvest Festival. There is a need to
keep a record of winners. The Rotarians after discussion decided to have only
major raffle prizes and stop collecting items from craft faire booths for the
raffle as the public is primarily interested in the grand, not the consolation,
prizes.
Kent Jackson has the snow cone machine and Daryle Polk will get the pop corn machine.
There should be more help from local youth groups in 2009.
The Boy Scout group has grown to 24 members and Durham High Interact provides
15-20 volunteers.
It was agreed that Chris Hatch and Glenn Pulliam should work
on development of a safety plan. It would be good to know who can quickly provide first aid in case someone faints or is injured.
Saturday, September 12th is set up day. All are asked to
come and help pick up items in the storage unit and then set booths up at
Spouses, family members, significant others are especially
welcome to help on Sunday, September 13th.
“Must be Present
to Win” Drawing
Bruce Norlie was not present to win the drawing of that name.

Creating lasting peace and facing the challenges to peace-building in the 21st century were some of the topics discussed at the second Rotary World Peace Symposium.
Humankind stands at a crossroads, said Paul Rogers, an expert in international security, at the opening plenary session on Thursday, 18 June.
"The
period between 1945 and 2045 will be the century where we will have to learn to
live with the ability to destroy ourselves," said Rogers, a professor of

The two-day symposium in Birmingham, England, providesa forum for lively discussion and networking opportunities for hundreds of Rotary World Peace Fellows, alumni, peace experts, and Rotarians. Topics discussed at the symposium included migration, development, religion, and ethnicity.
In his talk about the role of development in peace-building, David Chick, a 2005-07 peace fellow from Australia, discussed his field experience in Papua New Guinea, where he worked as director for Pacific programs at AusAID.
"Development is giving an individual an opportunity to use his or her talents to benefit society," said Chick. And simple projects can be effective, he added.
For example, to curb roadside assaults, rapes, and thefts, Chick devised a simple communications plan so local officials could use inexpensive megaphones to make announcements to roadside vendors about safety. Violence decreased, and "the megaphones became the biggest show in town, sometimes attracting as many as 5,000 people gathering to listen," said Chick. "It was low cost but also built a lasting security by involving beneficiaries in the process."
