VISITING
ROTARIANS & GUESTS
Pres. Mike noticed it seemed dark in the meeting room and KR Robertson quickly turned on the rest of the lights. With better vision, Pres. Mike was able to see that there were no guests nor any visiting Rotarians.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dr. And Mrs. Mosche
(spelling?) from Tanzania
Rotary Club will speak about the need for clean water at our
July 21st meeting. There will be a reception for the couple at
Butte Creek Country Club
on July 23 from 6:30-8:30pm.
District 5160 Membership Fair will be held in Red Bluff
on August 1st at 9 am. KR Robertson reported that it was a great meeting
and recommended attending this event.

the 2009 scholarship winners. One of the students, Steve Husar, sent a thank

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:
District 5160 Conference
The annual
District Conference will be held this year at
District 5160 Installation Dinner
President Mike reported that still no one had taken up the club’s offer to attend the District 5160 Awards and Installation Dinner at Rolling Hills Casino on July 11 at the Club expense. (See the district website for more information) At the last Board meeting, the Board voted to pay for one Durham Rotary member and their significant other to attend. If you would like to attend at the club’s expense, email President Mike, at gpulliam@mail.chicousd.org . The first person to email is the winner. This is a great opportunity to meet other Rotarians and experience some good Rotary fun. Assistant District Governor Stan Thompson also encouraged members to attend.
Past International President to Speak
at
Pres. Mike
again urged all Durham Rotarians to hear former RI President Rick King when he
speaks to the Chico Noon Rotary Club on Tuesday, September 22nd. The
Board of Directors voted to make this a meeting of record.
River Cats Rotary Night
Pres. Mike shared that there will be Rotary International night at the River
Cats game on August 9th. This is a
Polio Plus fund raiser.
RECOGNITIONS
Dave Jessen was called on by Pres. Mike as
Dave was 35 minutes late. Dave explained that he planned to be early, but was
delayed by the arrival of his daughter from
Sacramento. Dave was recognized for $5.00.
Clint Goss was asked by Pres. Mike about the remodeling on his cabin at Butte
Meadows. Clint was happy to contribute $5.00 for missing Durham Rotary meetings
while working on this project.
PROGRAM
Pres. Mike introduced Roberta Kirshner, founding mother of Barry R. Kirshner
Wildlife Foundation.
Roberta shared with Durham Rotarians that the Foundation is entirely run by
volunteers and enjoys participating in the
Harvest Festival.
The greatest news is that the Foundation is moving to Durham Pentz Road to a 19
acre site with all the requisite use permits. The new location doesn't have the
cap on visitors that the current site has. There will be no more limit of 10
cars per day.
There will be more interns for colleges to place at the Foundation and more
educational programs will be offered to the public.
By
October 2010, the Foundation must move to its new location. Community
support is helping the Foundation with surveying and blue prints. Local
veterinarians are helping with the treatment of animals with serious injuries
and challenges.
The Foundation shares the information it develops from treating and
caring for exotic animals with other facilities.
Roberta Kirshner told about the program for individuals ordered by the courts to
perform
community service assignments at the Foundation. She noted that the
Department of Fish and Game and the USDA are very supportive of the Foundation.
Ms. Kirshner shared information about the volunteer program. 600 to 700 pounds
of meat are fed to the animals and they must be fed everyday whether it is a
holiday or not. Eleven loads of laundry are done per day consisting of work
clothes, sheets and blankets. She has found
senior citizen volunteers
are great asset as they offer better ways of doing things based on experience
and knowledge gained over many years.
The Foundation does not receive any State or
Federal funds. Membership fees and off-site education programs provide
the bulk of the revenue for the Foundation.
Roberta Kirshner's grandmother lived next door to a wild life trainer. She fell
in love with training and caring for animals at a very young age. This lead to
working in the moves with the animals. She came to Durham when her son who
lived her passed away and has never left.
“Must be Present
to Win” Drawing
Norm Larson was present to win the drawing of that name.
