NEXT MEETING

Dave Mulqueeney, who apparently does not read the Rowel, was surprised to find out that he has the program next week.  Let’s see what he can come up with.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Patrick Ranch Parking

Roy Ellis still needs at least one more person to help with parking, for the second shift on Sunday.  This is for the event at the Patrick Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, June 13th and 14th.  There will be two shifts (8-12 and 12-4?) each day.  Roy Ellis is still short one person for the 12-3 shift Sunday.

District 5160

Conference

The annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

Installation Dinner

President Glenn reported that no one had taken up the club’s offer to attend the District 5160 Awards and Installation Dinner at Rolling Hills Casino on July 11 at the Club expense. (See the district website for more information)  At the last Board meeting, the Board voted to pay for one Durham Rotary member and their significant other to attend.  If you would like to attend at the club’s expense, email President Glenn, at gpulliam@mail.chicousd.org . The first person to email is the winner. This is a great opportunity to meet other Rotarians and experience some good Rotary fun.

Durham High Graduation

Steve Plume reported that he and Daryl Polk attended the Durham High School graduation last  Thursday evening, June 4th.     They presented the Rotary scholarships.  There was an audible surprise when they announced that Durham Rotary would present $21,000 in scholarships.

The following is Roy Ellis’ news release to the Chico Enterprise-Record:

“News Release

Enterprise Record

The Rotary Club of Durham presented 21 scholarships totaling $21,000 to graduating Seniors  at Durham High School this year.

The following students received $1000 awards.

The proceeds from the  annual Rotary Fundraisers such as the “DURHAM HARVEST FESTIVAL”  held each  September,   the “CARNITAS FEED”, and the “CRAB FEED” have allowed  the Rotary Club of Durham to invest over $28, 000 this year in support of  “Youth Programs”,  Including Scholarships, Camp Royal Leadership Training and the Sober Grad Party.

Youth Committee Chair”

Past International President to Speak at Chico Rotary

Pres. Glenn again urged all Durham Rotarians to hear former RI President Rick King when he speaks to the Chico Noon Rotary Club on Tuesday, September 22nd.   The Board of Directors voted to make this a meeting of record.

River Cats Rotary Night

Pres. Glenn shared that there will be Rotary International night at the River Cats game on August 9th.  This is a Polio Plus fund raiser.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Glenn wanted to recognize your editor for his birthday last May, when he wasn’t at the meeting, but didn’t ask where he was.  He did ask him about missing last week’s meeting, when he was in Yreka on business.  He was really stretching to get him for something other than his birthday.  Somehow President Glenn overlooked that he missed both meeting the first two weeks in May and the airplane logo in the Rowels for those two weeks.  If that wasn’t clue enough there were statements in the Rowel which should have given him a clue that your editor might have been on vacation.  Which he was, in Cabo San Lucas.  He volunteered $75 to be matched by the Club’s $25 as a contribution towards his wife’s Paul Harris Fellowship.  He did pay an extra $10 for his birthday and the club sang.

President Glenn recognized Joe Nock for his anniversary.  He contributed $59 to become a Bell Ringer.

Norm Larson was having his 53 anniversary so contributed $50 less $3 for $47 (President Glenn’s new math).

Kent Jackson contributed $50 for his 50th anniversary.

PROGRAM

Bruce Miller introduced Curtis Colgan a glass expert from a supplier of Miller Glass.  Curtis Colgan gave a very interesting program about glass and the types made.  He had a lot of samples (wrapped in plastic) which he let many member break to demonstrate the characteristics of various types of glass.

NEW MEMBER

While I was in Mexico in May Jim Kirks added to the May 12th Rowel, that I had prepared ahead of time, the announcement that the Board had approved for membership Dan Driscoll.  His sponsor is new member Dan Davey.  I did not picked it up, on my return, and included it in the next Rowel.  So, out of an abundance of caution and to make sure he has been published twice before he is inducted next week, I am publishing it again.

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Roy Ellis  was present to win the drawing of that name.

From Rotary International:

Financial update on the global financial markets and their impact on Rotary

Rotary International News -- 3 June 2009

Dear Rotarians:

I’m happy to report moderate improvement in Rotary’s financial situation since my last letter on this subject on 2 April. Both Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation saw positive investment results in March and April, marking the first consecutive two-month period of growth this fiscal year. As a result, our investment losses have dropped from US$26 million recorded through February to $18 million as of 30 April for RI and from $222 million to $187 million for the Foundation. Most of the year-to-date losses remain unrealized and should reverse as the markets recover.

Revenues from club dues remain slightly ahead of budget, and total contributions to the Foundation are comparable to last year. However, a dramatic shift in current fund contributions from the Annual Programs Fund to PolioPlus in response to Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge has reduced the Foundation’s cash available to fund operations. As a result, we will soon be selling some investments to pay for the Foundation’s operating expenses.  As mentioned in my previous communication, the District Designated Fund remains secure at this time. Also, operating expenses for both RI and the Foundation remain favorably below budget in most areas, with these reductions projected to continue through the end of the fiscal year.

In April, the RI Finance Committee thoroughly reviewed our proposed 2009-10 RI operating budget, which is balanced and will tightly control spending. The committee recommended that the RI Board of Directors approve this budget at their June meeting. At this time, it is projected that RI’s General Surplus Fund will remain above the 85 percent level targeted by the RI Bylaws through 2009-10.

Also in April, the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation approved an austere operating budget for fiscal year 2009-10. Read a summary here: Chairman Jonathan Majiyagbe's letter.

For more than 20 years, your Foundation has operated on earnings from Annual Programs Fund investments, enabling the Trustees to spend every dollar contributed by Rotarians on humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs and program operations. During this period, the Trustees also spent approximately $100 million of investment returns on PolioPlus, Children’s Opportunities Grants, and other humanitarian programs. However, the current financial situation may prevent us from funding the Foundation’s operations in this manner for the next several years. Therefore, at the request of the Trustees, Trustee Chair Jonathan Majiyagbe appointed a special committee to develop an equitable and effective multiyear plan to restore the Foundation’s reserves. Additionally, the Foundation’s Investment Advisory Committee is reviewing the Annual Programs Fund investment policy to ensure that the value of your contributions is protected and that the Foundation will have sufficient liquidity to meet program payments and operating expenses.

Our Foundation has thrived over the past few decades. The growth in our programs is due to your financial support. If you have not yet done so, I hope you will join those Rotarians who have made a contribution to the Annual Programs Fund by 30 June. Every gift, no matter the amount, counts. Your generosity will make a difference in the 33,000 communities that Rotary serves.

More in-depth financial information is available at www.rotary.org/financials. In addition, the annual Treasurer’s Report to the Convention will be posted on the RI Web site during the upcoming convention in Birmingham, England, along with the General Secretary’s Report to the Convention, which will provide information on many RI and Rotary Foundation activities over the past year.

Sincerely,

Ed Futa
