Patrick Ranch Parking

Help with parking is again needed this year for the event at the Patrick Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, June 13th and 14th.  There will be two shifts (8-12 and 12-4) needed each day.  Roy Ellis still needs a couple more volunteers to help with parking at the Threshing Bee.

District 5160

Conference

President Glenn announced that the annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

Installation Dinner

District 5160 is hosting an Awards and Installation Dinner at Rolling Hills Casino on July 11. (See the district website for more information)  At last night’s Board meeting, the Board voted to pay for one Durham Rotary member and their significant other to attend.  If you would like to attend at the club’s expense, email President Glenn, at gpulliam@mail.chicousd.org . The first person to email is the winner. This is a great opportunity to meet other Rotarians and experience some good Rotary fun.

Durham High Graduation

President Glenn announced that the Durham High School graduation will be Thursday evening, June 4th.     Daryle Polk will present the Rotary scholarships and all Durham Rotarians are invited to attend the ceremony.

Past International President to Speak at Chico Rotary

Pres. Glenn urged all Durham Rotarians to hear former RI President Rick King when he speaks to the Chico Noon Rotary Club on Tuesday, September 22nd.   The Board of Directors voted to make this a meeting of record.

Carnitas Feed Report

Pres. Glenn thanked Norm Larson and his crew for a very successful Carnitas Feed.   The event raised $1700.00 compared to $700.00 a year ago.  Estimated attendance was 150.

Election Help Report

After the Carnitas Feed,  the following Durham Rotarians helped with the election on May 19th: Dave Jessen, Dave Mulqueeney, Kent Jackson, Craig Hastain, Steve Plume, Mike Wacker, and Clint Goss.  Pres. Glenn showed a thank you note for the Butte County Elections officials.

Ravekes Park Project Report

Mike Crump announced that the concrete pour had been successful and circulated pictures to prove it.

River Cats Rotary Night

Pres. Glenn shared that there will be Rotary International night at the River Cats game on August 9th.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Glenn invited Bruce Miller to come forward to ring the bell as Bruce was not present to ring the bell last week.

When Steve Greenwood was asked to be recognized for his anniversary on June 20th, Pres. Glenn learned that Steve and his wife had already celebrated their anniversary on March 20th.

Kent Jackson celebrated his 75th birthday on May 21st.   He was recognized for $7 and requested that Norm Larson sing for him, which Norm did with gusto!

Glenn Pulliam celebrated his 55th birthday on May 27th and contributed $10 for no song.

Pres. Glenn encouraged members to become Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members.   When a member contributes $75 to the Rotary Foundation, the Club will contribute $25 to make the $100 annual contribution for Sustaining Members.   President Glenn elected to take advantage of this opportunity to become a Sustaining Member to reflect his gratitude for his son Bryce receiving his MD Degree on Saturday.

Clint Goss celebrated his 73rd birthday on June 1st and was recognized for $10 for no song.

Jim Patterson's  son Daniel is now engaged and Pres. Glenn suggested a $25 contribution.  Rev. Jim responded with $41 and Pres. Glenn said $41 and made Rev. Jim a bell ringer.

Steve Plume tried to get the bidding going for the Grinder and succeed in bidding against himself to the tune of $50.

PROGRAM

Dar Meyer introduced Jan Holman who spoke on the history of Durham.   Jan showed some of the items that people have donated to her for a future Durham museum.   An inkwell from the Durham Flour Mill, a bell from the school, and a box with Indian beads found on the Durham Ranch were called to our attention.   1869 was an important date as the transcontinental railroad was completed, and the burlap sack was invented.   This made it possible for the Northern Sacramento Valley to ship wheat to the world.   The Oroville Chico Highway follows the old stage coach route.  The arrival of the Oregon-California Railroad in 1870 connected Durham to Sacramento and San Francisco.   Before then, the Sacramento River was our highway and Dayton was a larger city than Chico as it was the shipping point for goods on the Sacramento River.

Pakistan moves to end polio in the face of conflict

Pakistan's effort to eradicate polio is moving ahead, despite the displacement of up to one million people by the military conflict in the country's North-West Frontier Province.

Among the positive developments reported by the World Health Organization:

WHO officials say it is vital to reach children of displaced families, because access to these children has been hampered by the poor security situation in the province.

To promote the upcoming NIDs, aimed at reaching 33 million children nationally, Rotarians and social workers joined a walk against polio in Karachi on 21 May, led by the city's deputy mayor, Nasreen Jalil.

"After the walk, the deputy mayor gave polio drops to kids and appealed to all citizens to participate," says Aziz Memon, a member of the Rotary Club of Karachi, Sind, and past governor of District 3270 (Afghanistan; Pakistan). "Because of the presence of the deputy mayor, the event was covered by all print and electronic media and will create a lot of awareness."
