I left a space. Thank you. Phil

REPORTS
Roy Ellis announced that scholarship interviews were conducted on May 4th. Then he presented an award for outstanding service to Colleen Coutts, Durham High School Administrator. Colleen is being proposed for membership in Durham Rotary Club by Roy Ellis.
Pres. Glenn announced that Carnitas Feed tickets are available at $20.00 each. Also, he mentioned that five Durham Rotarians had volunteered to help with the election on May 19th. Four more volunteers are needed. Dar Meyer, Mick Wacker and Steve Plume volunteered to help on the election night. Hopefully one more Durham Rotarian will volunteer to bring the crew to nine.
Roy Ellis needs volunteers to help with parking at the Threshing Bee.
Pres. Glenn encouraged members to become Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members. When a member contributes $75 to the Rotary Foundation, the Club will contribute $25 to make the $100 annual contribution for Sustaining Members. So far 3 Durham Rotarians have taken this opportunity to become Sustaining Members.
Norm Larson invited the parents of Durham Scholarship recipients to consider joining our Rotary Club.
Election Night Help Needed
The Butte County Clerk and Registar of Voters

total of $100. See more on the Paul
Harris Foundation below.
District Conference
President
Glenn announced that the annual District Conference will be held this year at
PROGRAM
Chris Hatch decided not to do a program on Dog Trials as it might be raiing and Durham Rotarians might not enjoy watching the trails outdoors in bad weather. Instead Chris gave a very interesting and fact filled presentation on Prostate Cancer. Chris has survived prostate cancer for five years. If you survive 10 years and have a low PSA count, you are considered cured. Digital and PSA tests can identify prostate cancer. One should take the PSA test annually by age 50 and definitely at age 60.
Complications from treatment for prostate cancer can be a serious matter. Complications include impotence and urine leakage. fortunately, the treatment program that Chris chose did not result in any complications.
Must be Present to Win
Bruce Miller was not present to win the Must be Present to Win Drawing.
ROTARY
EDUCATION
As you could tell above,
I am not here. So this and the next
Rowel are my annual Rotary education issues.
The purpose is to reeducate long time Rotarians, to educate new
Rotarians and to educate all Rotarians in new things. A few weeks ago I inserted a communication
from the District Foundation Chairperson about changes in the Paul Harris
Foundation program. I promised further
information. Here are two articles.
Current Process
"Recognition" reflects the combination of cash
giving that the person has made plus any points transferred to them from
others. That figure should always increase (unless an error has been made and
needs correction.) The person's recognition award (certificate, pins, etc.) is
based on this total.
"Available Foundation Points" begin to accumulate
after the individual reaches the 1,000 level and becomes a Paul Harris Fellow.
Once a person has reached the amount of 1000 and is now a PHF, for every
one dollar in cash that is contributed over that 1000, in addition to
increasing recognition level, a
bonus "point" is also received - one point for every dollar, which
may be transferred to others. The points total will therefore fluctuate as
points are earned and then are used.
If an individual is transferring points, then that person must sign the #
102 Transfer form; if the club is giving the points, then the current president
must sign; if the district is giving points, then the DG must sign. Only one
signature is required. The forms may be faxed for quickest processing. Usual
turn-around time is 4 to 6 weeks. If a contribution is sent using the Form #
123, points can be added in section 5, but still require a signature from the
donor or club president.
Individuals may choose to use or not use their points; this
will not have any effect upon their own recognition level
achievement.
Paul Harris recognition is awarded at every thousand dollar level up to
9,000 and then moves into Major Donor status. Major Donor is calculated
differently however, as it is based only upon one's own personal cash giving;
points do not count towards Major Donor status the way they do towards Paul
Harris recognition.
Clubs (or districts) generate points for the club (or district) as an entity
whenever they contribute
funds for the club (or district) as a
whole and it is not dispersed as actual cash given by specific members.
The club (or district) may then later distribute these points to give
recognition to individuals as it chooses.
The club president has authority to transfer points (not recognition amount) of a deceased member to another
individual using the Transfer Form # 102 or sending the request in writing. The
president also has authority to transfer points (not recognition amount) of a
terminated club member with one caveat: if that person re-joins Rotary, they
have the right to ask the club to transfer back the equivalent number of
points. As with any points transfer, these points may only be given to an
individual (not to a club or district) and once they are transferred, may not
be transferred again.
Changes to the Foundation Recognition Program
What changes are being made to the
Foundation recognition programs?
·
Paul
Harris Fellow medallions will not be provided automatically but will be
available for purchase.
·
(most
likely this will cost about $15.00 US)
·
The
individual donor will be the only person authorized to transfer Foundation
recognition points.
·
Foundation
recognition points will expire upon the death of the donor or the death of the
surviving spouse of a Major Donor (US$10,000+).
·
Foundation
recognition points and recognition amounts will only be transferred for
transactions of 500 points or more.
When will changes to the recognition
process take effect?
·
The
new policies take effect
Why are these changes being made?
·
It
has long been the wish of The Rotary Foundation Trustees to simplify the
Foundation’s programs and allow more resources to meet donors’ expectations.
The Future Vision Plan and these changes are intended to simplify the recognition
program and, therefore, make the Foundation a more efficient, timely, and
cost-effective steward of the gifts of many Rotarian and non-Rotarian donors.
Will club presidents still be able
to transfer Foundation recognition points from members’ IDs?
·
Historically,
Rotary club presidents have been allowed to authorize transfers of Foundation
recognition points from the IDs of current and former members of their club.
Once this change is implemented, only the individual donor may transfer
Foundation recognition points from their ID.
What does it mean that Foundation
recognition points expire upon the death of the donor or the death of the
surviving spouse of a Major Donor?
· Because only the donor will be authorized to transfer Foundation recognition points, any remaining points will expire after the donor’s death. A surviving spouse of a Major Donor, however, may still authorize transfers on the donor’s behal
What does the new 500 point
threshold for transfers mean?
·
Though
individuals, clubs, and districts may still transfer Foundation recognition
points to name new Paul Harris Fellows and present further Paul Harris
recognition awards, the minimum transfer from an account will be 500 points.
Transfer requests of less than 500 points, or Paul Harris Fellow recognition
amounts, would not be processed.
What does it mean that Paul Harris
Fellow medallions are available for purchase?
·
The
standard recognition materials will no longer include the current Paul Harris
Fellow medallions. This item is optional and will be shipped only by special
order. Recognition practices will be assessed on an ongoing basis to ensure the
goals of the organization are achieved.
