REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Work Day Last Saturday

This was a worldwide Rotary event where members join forces to tackle community service projects in their neighborhoods, from planting to painting, from reading to renovating.  Members reported to Ravekes Park in Durham to dig the footings and set the forms for the slab.  Thanks to all who showed up to work.

Mike Crump has asked for volunteers to help with pouring the concrete Friday (tomorrow).  Call him to volunteer.

Here are the pictures president Glenn took during the work session.

Scholarship Interviews

Roy Ellis needs some help with scholarship interviews at Durham high School next Monday and/or Tuesday.  Please call him.

Election Night Help Needed

The  Butte County Clerk and Registar of Voters again is requesting the assistance of Durham Rotary members for election night, May 19th So far Craig Hastain, Clint Goss, Tom Vanella, Steve Greenwood, Steve Plume, Mike Crump, Glenn Pulliam and Dave Davey have volunteered.  President Glenn indicates that we still need more volunteers.  This is the night of the Carnitas Feed.  Members who are willing to volunteer to do this can go directly from the Carnitas Feed to the Employment Center, since the work does not start until a little after 7:30 pm when the Carnitas Feed should be over.  Please contact President Glenn to let him know you want to assist in this worthwhile project, which does make some money for the Club. You will be assigned to the DESS/Butte Community Employment Center Receiving Center at 2445 Carmichael Drive, Chico.  For more information, including a list of the jobs needed, see the letter from the Clerk at the end of the April 14th Rowel.

Exchange Student Host Families Needed

Assistant District Governor, Stan Thomson, of the Chico Club, reported that the two Chico Clubs will be hosting 2 exchange student this year.  They still need some host families.  If you have never done this, it is quite an experience and education.  We hosted an AFS Exchange Student for nearly a year, many years ago, in my pre-Rotary days.  Many members of Durham Rotary have done so in the past.  Rotary does it differently.  I believe they use several host families for each student so that no one family keeps the student for a long period, as we did.  If you are interested, contact Stan or President Glenn.

Carnitas Feed

Please mark Tuesday evening May 19, 2009 on your calendars as we will be having the Carnitas Feed in Durham Park.  Four $20 tickets were given to each Durham Rotarian.  If you do not have yours, get them from Steve Greenwood.  You will be charged for them, whether you use or sell them.

Patrick Ranch Parking

Help with parking is again needed this year for the event at the Patrick Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, June 13th and 14th.  There will be two shifts (8-12 and 12-4) needed each day.  Please let Roy Ellis know if you can volunteer.

District Conference

President Glenn announced that the annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

RECOGNITIONS

Mike Wacker paid $10 for his birthday, having elected not to be sung to.

Dan Davey asked his table to sing Happy Birthday to him so he paid only $7.

Dave Mulqueeney paid $10 for arguing with President Glenn, but he did get a T-Shirt.

K. R. Robertson lost the Grinder, which cost him $20.  He was holding it for Jim Kirks.  President Glenn “found’ it and presented it to Steve Greenwood who had bid it in last week.

Joe Nock got a free ride for something, but I am not sure what.

PROGRAM

Steve Greenwood presented Jacob Kley, past president of Colusa Rotary, from TOR Broadcasting/Colusa Industrial Properties who spoke about the Sutter Buttes New Communications Tower Installation.

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Didn’t get a report on the must be present to win drawing.

Shelter, aid reach victims of Italian quake

    Rotary International News -- 17 April 2009

Hours after a powerful earthquake struck central Italy on 6 April, killing nearly 300 people, a team of ShelterBox volunteers reached the affected areas to distribute 245 containers of relief supplies to hundreds of displaced families.

The quake, Italy's deadliest in nearly three decades, left tens of thousands homeless, and damaged or destroyed at least 15,000 buildings across the mountain city of L'Aquila.

In the chaos after the disaster, the ShelterBox team worked with local Rotarians and Italy's Civil Protection Agency to set up five tent camps in the nearby village of Assergi.

"The situation was quite critical in the first couple days," says John Diksa, a ShelterBox volunteer and president of the Rotary Club of Grenoble-Grésivaudan, Isère, France. "Our quick advancement in affected areas helped families stay together. Italian Rotarians were extremely helpful in identifying the areas in most need."

ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs around the world, provides boxes that contain a tent, blankets, water purification and cooking equipment, basic tools, and other necessities to help a family of 10 survive for six months.

Diksa estimates that more than 2,000 people have benefited from the ShelterBox containers distributed in Italy after the quake. Most of the families will rely on temporary shelter until September, he says.

District 2090, which covers Albania and parts of Italy, including the most devastated areas, has organized meetings for the next couple of weeks with the nine other Italian districts to discuss intermediate and long-term relief projects.

District officials said the district will focus on making engineers and architects available and lending any technical expertise it can to the most damaged communities. Long-term initiatives would include helping businesses that plan to rebuild.
