REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Work Day This Saturday

President Glenn again reminded members  about the Rotary Community Work Day on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 8:00 am. The work day will be at Ravekes Park in Durham.  This is where we have done work in the recent past.  It still needs a concrete slab.  We need to dig the footings and set the forms for the slab.

From Mike Crump:

The pad will be 12X12 feet and 5 to 6 inches deep. Thus we need the following;

1)      Four 2x6 twelve feet in length. ( I will buy and deliver if nobody has any)

2)      Nails

3)      Wooden (or steel) stakes.

4)      Shovels, rakes and other tools to remove sod and prepare pad.

5)      Sand for bedding. We should have a at least an inch of sand or gravel on the bottom.

(Any member who can furnish any of the above items, please let Mike know.)

That should do it for Saturday.  We should meet at 8 am.

We also need to ask if any of the members can finish concrete. I would suggest that we have a 2nd work party (smaller) later on in the week where we can have the concrete pumped to the pad. (no wheel barrowing). We will need a couple of Rotarians to level and screed the concrete. But we will also need some one with concrete tools and a little concrete finishing know how to finish the pour.

This 2nd work party can probable take place on a week day afternoon??

This is a worldwide Rotary event where members join forces to tackle community service projects in their neighborhoods, from planting to painting, from reading to renovating.  It is for the Club to get a little publicity.

Election Night Help Needed

The  Butte County Clerk and Registar of Voters again is requesting the assistance of Durham Rotary members for election night, May 19th So far Craig Hastain, Clint Goss, Tom Vanella, Steve Greenwood, Steve Plume, Mike Crump, Glenn Pulliam and Dave Davey have volunteered.  We need several more.  This is the night of the Carnitas Feed.  Members who are willing to volunteer to do this can go directly from the Carnitas Feed to the Employment Center, since the work does not start until a little after 7:30 pm when the Carnitas Feed should be over.  Please contact President Glenn to let him know you want to assist in this worthwhile project, which does make some money for the Club. You will be assigned to the DESS/Butte Community Employment Center Receiving Center at 2445 Carmichael Drive, Chico.  For more information, including a list of the jobs needed, see the letter from the Clerk at the end of the April 14th Rowel.

Exchange Student Host Families Needed

Assistant District Governor, Stan Thomson, of the Chico Club, reported that the two Chico Clubs will be hosting 2 exchange student this year.  They still need some host families.  If you have never done this, it is quite an experience and education.  We hosted an AFS Exchange Student for nearly a year, many years ago, in my pre-Rotary days.  Many members of Durham Rotary have done so in the past.  Rotary does it differently.  I believe they use several host families for each student so that no one family keeps the student for a long period, as we did.  If you are interested, contact Stan or President Glenn.

Carnitas Feed

Please mark Tuesday evening May 19, 2009 on your calendars as we will be having the Carnitas Feed in Durham Park.  Four $20 tickets were given to each Durham Rotarian.  If you do not have yours, get them from Steve Greenwood.  You will be charged for them, whether you use or sell them.

Patrick Ranch Parking

Help with parking is again needed this year for the event at the Patrick Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, June 13th and 14th.  There will be two shifts (8-12 and 12-4) needed each day.  Please let President Glenn know if you can volunteer.  I assume Bruce Norlie will be in charge again this year, but he wasn’t at this meeting to confirm that.

District Conference

President Glenn announced that the annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

RECOGNITIONS

President Glenn, following up on his getting a freebie, from his new Sergeant at Arms Dave Mulgueeney, for being late to last week’s  meeting, started this meeting on time but gave everyone who was late a freebie for being late to the meeting.  (Does this mean that there will be assessments for arriving late at future meetings).

Daryl Polk was recognized for his 28th anniversary in the amount of $28.

President Glenn reported some phone calls from Susan Jessen about one of our storage units being unlocked.  Steve confessed that he forgot to engage the lock.  Before he was assessed for that oversight there was a spirited bidding for the Grinder, which he got for $85.  He confessed also to a trip to Southern California and the Oak Quary Golf Course, where he hit his first “hole-in-one”, and a new mustang automobile.

Bruce Miller spent some time in Mexico and missed two meetings.  He contributed $50.

PROGRAM

Cling Goss introduced Greg Kelly of the California Olive Ranch.  He discussed olive growing for olive oil in the world and in Northern California.  His presentation included photographs of the new SHD (Super High Density) planting of Spanish and Greek varieties, which are short and more bush like and which can be machine harvested.  They use a modified grape harvester.  He also discussed olive oil grading and the lack of any controls in the United States  which allows poor olive oil from Europe to be labeled as “extra virgin” when it isn’t.

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Chris Hatch was not present to win the drawing of that name.
