REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Election Night Help Needed

President Glenn received the following message from Julie Merrell, Administrative Assistant to Candy Grubbs, Butte County Clerk and Registar of Voters:

Once again we are requesting the assistance of Durham Rotary members for election night, May 19th.  Please see the attached letter and advise if your club is available.  Thank you!!”

See the letter at the end of this Rowel.  This is the night of the Carnitas Feed.  Members who are willing to volunteer to do this can go directly from the Carnitas Feed to the Employment Center, since the work does not start until 7:30 pm when the Carnitas Feed should be over.  Please contact President Glenn to let him know you want to assist in this worthwhile project, which does make some money for the Club.

Exchange Student Host Families Needed

Assistant District Governor, Stan Thomson, of the Chico Club, reported that the two Chico Clubs will be hosting 2 exchange student this year.  They still need some host families.  If you have never done this, it is quite an experience and education.  We hosted an AFS Exchange Student for nearly a year, many years ago, in my pre-Rotary days.  Many members of Durham Rotary have done so in the past.  Rotary does it differently.  I believe they use several host families for each student so that no one family keeps the student for a long period, as we did.  If you are interested, contact Stan or President Glenn.

Membership Social Thanks!

President Glenn thanked members for their participation in the Membership Social last week.  It is now time to follow it up by inviting the prospective members back to more meetings and get them into the club.  We will probably do another Membership Social next fall, but we need to get new members in the club now, so we will have them for the Fall Festival.

Carnitas Feed

Please mark Tuesday evening May 19, 2009 on your calendars as we will be having the Carnitas Feed in Durham Park.  Four $20 tickets were given to each Durham Rotarian.  If you do not have yours, get them from Steve Greenwood.  You will be charged for them, whether you use or sell them.

Work Day

President Glenn again reminded members  about the Rotary Community Work Day on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The work day will be at Ravekes Park in Durham.  This is where we have done work in the recent past.  It still needs a concrete slab.  We need to dig the footings and set the forms for the slab.

This is a worldwide Rotary event where members join forces to tackle community service projects in their neighborhoods, from planting to painting, from reading to renovating.  It is for the Club to get a little publicity.

Report From Walt Schafer

Below is a progress report from Moshi received by Walt Schafer regarding the water project in Tanzania that he told us about a few weeks ago, and in which we are now participating.

“Hello Walt!

You and Teresa are presumably on your way to Vietnam.  Hope your travel is safe and enjoyable and that  authentic Vietnamese cuisine will be welcoming  you.  Over here things are moving ahead, with understandable snags here and there. At Spillway trench digging has commenced, starting from the site of the storage  tank. Approximately 200 meters have been completed, and Mr. Iddo has been requested to go there quickly to help correct some things.  Meanwhile, Mr. Iddo has been working on purchase invoices, for tax exemption purposes and in preparation for the first shipment of cement, etc., to start work at the site.  The Treasurer has just informed me about the arrival of the money from RI. The ball is now in our court, not Walt's or Chico Rotarians'!! We are determined to deliver.

Mr. Iddo has appointed someone to represent him at Spillway and he will shortly--may be early next week--be moving his brick-making machine there. Next weekend  Young and I will also be going to Nyumba ya Mungu to see things for ourselves.  The cleaning up of the Spillway is moving ahead. Transportation of the garbage collection containers has taxed us. The executive officer, Mr. Paulo Sheppy Nyahinga, will be coming to Moshi, to purchase them and have them retrofitted with handles, etc. ready for shipment with the first large truck that will be ferrying things there. Please re-assure my Project Manager, that things are on course!

Walt, thank you ever so much for your ongoing efforts with Durham Rotary Club , the Clubs of Orlando and Paradise, and Faith Lutheran Church of Chico. I also thank you for advising that we consider including one station of the rainwater harvesting system at Mwika SIMMUCo campus in our next Matching Grant project.

I fully concur with the preparatory time line that you  have proposed for this project. I look forward to our  joint work in preparing the narrative and budget for the grant application. In view of the apparent impact of the ongoing economic turmoil on the finances of RI, we have to be extra-focused and try to ensure that the application is submitted on time (or at the right time?)..
Meanwhile I am starting to sensitize the Head of Campus at Mwika and other people there that they should prepared to receive hearty Rotarians and Church folks that might descend on them with hammers (swinging in all directions) and nails, to put an end to water problems there!

 Enjoy yourselves in Vietnam!! “.

District Conference

President Glenn announced that the annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

RECOGNITIONS

President Glenn announced that Dave Mulgueeney is the new Sergeant at Arms for the remainder of the year.  Dave gave President Glenn a freebie for being late to the meeting.

Even though I stated, at the beginning of the last Rowel, that I was in Yreka on business, the night of the last meeting President Glenn recognized me $10 for missing the meeting.

Daryl Polk who was home taking care of sick kids also contributed $10 for missing the last meeting.

Mike Crump contributed $30 for missing the meeting and for his upcoming Birthday.  The Club sang.

Craig Hastains, paid $10 for his birthday which occurred long before he became a member, just because President Glenn didn’t want him to feel left out.  Again the club sang, I think.

PROGRAM

Glenn Pulliam introduced Lee Laney, Program Officer of the North Valley Community Foundation.  Lee spoke about the Foundation and what it does.  He also noted that they have spawned a new Durham Community Foundation as a result of a bequest in a will.

“Must be Present to Win” Drawing

Mike Crump  was present to win the drawing of that name.

April 14, 2009

Glenn Pullium, President

Rotary Club of Durham

gpulliam@mail.chicousd.org

Hello Glenn:

Once again, I would like to thank all of the members of your organization who participated on election night in November, 2008.  They all did an excellent job and, with their assistance, the election night processing was a great success.

We are again seeking help from the Durham Rotarians in the following positions for election night support on May 19, 2009.   They will be assigned to the DESS/Butte Community Employment Center receiving center in the following positions:

Election Supply Loaders ~ 6 people:

Responsibilities are to remove election supplies and touch screen units from precinct officer vehicles and load them into the U-Haul moving vans.  They need to be able to lift approximately 50 pounds.  Recommend men work in this position.

Check In Assistants ~ 3 people:

At each receiving center site, we will need 3 people to assist our elections staff with check in of each precinct’s Voted Ballot container, Memory Card bag and Return bag.

Coordinator ~ 1 person:

Coordinator is responsible for ensuring Rotarians show up on election evening as scheduled and be the primary contact person with the Butte County Elections Office.

Pay rate:

Elections Supply Loaders and Check In Assistants:  $10.00/hr

Time:

Arrive at assigned receiving center location by 7:30pm.  Election Supply Loaders could be as late at 10:30pm.

Receiving Center Site:

Once again, thank you for your interest in assisting us with the election night process.  I look forward to hearing from you.
