REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

BOARD MEETING

There was a meeting of the Club Board of Directors at 5:00 pm , before tonight’s meeting.

President Glenn explained to the Club members that the Board has discussed a three year commitment of $2,000.00 for a Water project in cooperation with the Chico Noon Rotary Club and possibly with the Paradise Rotary Club.  It was moved by Tom Vanella and seconded by Andy Farrar to approve the commitment of $2,000.00 this year and in the following two years for the Water project. The motion carried unanimously.

Carnitas Fee

Please mark Tuesday evening May 19, 2009 on your calendars as we will be having the Carnitas Feed in Durham Park.  Four $20 tickets will be given to each Durham Rotarian.

Work Day

President Glenn again reminded members  about the Rotary Community Work Day on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The work day will be at Ravekes Park in Durham.  This is where we have done work in the recent past.  It still needs a concrete slab.  We need to dig the footings for the slab.

This is a worldwide Rotary event where members join forces to tackle community service projects in their neighborhoods, from planting to painting, from reading to renovating.  It is for the Club to get a little publicity.

District Conference

President Glenn announced that the annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Glenn recognized Roy Ellis for not telling his guest Brian Harvey that Durham Rotary no longer meets at the Durham Veterans Memorial Hall.

Dave Jessen was recognized by Pres. Glenn for having a birthday. Dave agreed to pay $10 for Pres. Glenn to sing "Happy Birthday" which he did.

Kent Jackson was called on since Pres. Glenn noticed that Kent hadn’t been recognized in the past nine months. Although Kent couldn’t mention having accomplished anything special, Kent did agree to being recognized for $20.

Pres. Glenn called on Jane Ziad who had flown to Ottawa. Jane reported that she encountered winter weather and saw members of her family. Jane agreed to a $25 recognition.

Pres. Glenn announced that yesterday was Norm Larson’s birthday. Norm demanded that Bill Apger sing "Happy Birthday" and paid $10.

Pres. Glenn reported that he got a message from the Sutter County Sheriff about a ruckus involving men on horses. Norm Larson and Roy Ellis paid $10 apiece for the 2nd Comanche ride.

PROGRAM

This meeting was our first Membership Social.  So the program was about introducing the guests to Rotary and, in particular, Durham Rotary.

Roy Ellis talked about Youth Service. He circulated the resumes of the four students selected to attend Camp Royal. They are David Hodge, Julia Herring, Nikki Pyle and Shane Strick. Roy mentioned that Durham Rotary honors Students of the Month with a plaque. Annually Durham Rotary gives over $20,000.00 in scholarship to seniors graduating from Durham H. S. Funds for the scholarships and community projects are raised by the Harvest Festival, Crab Feed and Carnitas Feed.

Brian Harvey was presented a plaque for being the first Interact advisor at Durham High School. Brian spoke about his experience with Interact which helped students in volunteering for community service. Pres. Glenn announced that Brian Harvey is retiring after 32 years at Durham High School.

Steve Greenwood spoke about the Harvest Festival and distributed posters for the 30th Durham Rotary Harvest Festival which will be September 13, 2009.

Dan Davis spoke about Rotary Foundation and the Paul Harris Fellowship program. Rotary International is in more countries than the United Nations. Rotary International has worked 20 years to eliminate polio in the world. The Rotary International scholarship program has more students than the Rhodes, Fulbright and other international scholarship programs combined.

Rev. Jim Patterson announced that he didn’t go on the Comanche Ride this year and any other year because he wasn’t invited and he doesn’t have a horse. Rev. Jim talked about scholarships and Camp Royal. His favorite Durham Rotary project as the Putney St. Project which involved rebuilding the street curbs, sidewalks, gutters and drains. Butte County came and paved the street. The project was a success because there was much community involvement. He then gave a history of numerous Durham Rotary projects which benefited the community over the years.

President Glenn announced that the Board has approved helping members become sustaining Paul Harris Fellows. For each member that contributes $75.00, the Club will contribute the $25.00 to make the member a $100 a year sustaining Paul Harris Fellow.
