REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Durham Rotary “Membership Social”

President Glenn again reminded us to invite prospective members to the Durham Rotary “Membership Social” for our meeting of April 7th .    So start thinking about member prospects to invite.

District Assembly This Saturday

President Glenn reported that 9 members of the Durham Rotary Club attended the District Assembly last Saturday at Butte College.

He listed the names of the members too fast for your reporter to get them down, but you know who you are.  Thank you.  President Glenn indicated that Durham Rotary was recognized for their participation, which was more than most.  In fact, for a club our size, it was the best participation.  President Glenn indicated that attendance was well worth it.  They learned a lot about Rotary.

For those who missed, there will be two more District Assemblies:

Saturday, April 11 - IN CONCORD

8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Work Day

President Glenn again reminded members  about the Rotary Community Work Day on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Absent any other ideas, it appears that our project will again be at Ravekes Park in Durham.  This is where we have done work in the recent past.  It still needs a concrete slab.  We need to dig the footings for the slab.

This is a worldwide Rotary event where members join forces to tackle community service projects in their neighborhoods, from planting to painting, from reading to renovating.  It is for the Club to get a little publicity.

District Conference

President Glenn announced that the annual District Conference will be held this year at Lake Tahoe on October 1st – 4th.

RECOGNITIONS

None tonight.

PROGRAM

Before the visitation to PFC Lighting, Dorna Anderson spoke for a few minutes about her plans for the block where Bustolini’s and PFC Lighting are located.  She is the daughter of Nels Anderson, a long time black smith and welder whose shop was at the Salem Street end of the block.  He was also a longtime member of Durham Rotary.  The brick buildings are historic buildings, over a hundred years old.  Once a brewery in early Chico they have held many businesses over the years, including a brothel and the original Pullins Cyclery operated by Mr. Pullins (from which my first bicycle came).

Then Dan Davis introduced Robert O’Neal owner of   PFC Lighting who took us to his design center and work shop where he designs and makes various items from glass (mostly art glass), including may light fixtures.

Drawing

There was no drawing tonight.

Polio Immunization Trip to Nigeria

Here is an email received by President Glenn.  He previously emailed it to members, but just as a reminder, I include it below.

Dear Rotarians:

Approximately six weeks ago, you received a message that announced our plans to organize polio immunization trips to India in March and Nigeria in May.  The purpose of this correspondence is to formally announce the Nigeria trip, and to open it up to Rotarians to join our program.  Attached is a PDF file that has full details about the program.  However, permit me to summarize the key information, as follows:

Kano, Kaduna and Zaira, Nigeria – Participate in National Immunization Days to Eradicate Polio and Attend the District 9120 Rotary Conference

02 May – Depart U.S.

12 May – Return to U.S.

The fight against polio is in its last phase, and the challenge to eradicate the disease has become much more tactical.  Now there are only a few weeks between the time a government establishes the date of a National Immunization Day and the date itself.  If you have ever wanted to participate in a polio eradication trip, this is the trip and NOW is the time.  As a result, we expect that this might be one of the last chances you have to join a group program to eradicate polio.  If you have ever wanted to participate in a polio eradication trip, this is the trip and NOW is the time.

In addition to spending three days engaged in the polio eradication effort, we will enjoy the unique experience of attending the District 9120 Rotary Conference in Zaira.

We have a limited number of places available on this trip.  Based upon the e-mail we sent out earlier this month, we already have about 12 people signed up.  Therefore, if you would like to be a part of this effort, we strong suggest you take immediate action.  Further, please make an announcement in your club THIS COMING WEEK so that they can join us.  We expect this trip to be sold out by the week of March 30, 2009.

To register for the trip, please complete the enclosed application and send it to our office as soon as possible.  Due to the short lead time of this program, full payment of the ground portion of the trip is required to join the trip.  You can pay by check, or credit card (Visa or MasterCard).  Please MAKE SURE to notate your originating airport on the enclosed application.  Upon our receipt of your application, we will then prepare your flight itinerary and contact you to confirm your acceptance of the itinerary if you need to purchase connecting flights to join the group in Detroit

Also, please carefully read the information in the folder regarding securing a visa.  All U.S. citizens must have a Nigerian visa.  Therefore, your immediate action will be required.  You must complete a visa application on line, and provide your passport, pictures, etc. The timing on securing your visas will be critical.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for you to be a part of the eradication of polio.  We hope you, or members of your club can join us.  NOW is the time you should take action if you plan to have this experience.

Thank you and best regards,

Brad
