This Rowel is a combined Rowel for the meeting of January 24, 2009 (the Crab Feed) and January 27, 2009.

This Rowel is a combined Rowel for the meeting of January 24, 2009 (the Crab Feed) and January 27, 2009.

First the Crab Feed:

FUTURE MEETINGS:

February Program Chairperson is Jane Ziad

February 3rd:  Daryl Polk

February 10th:  Phil Price

February 17th:  No Meeting.

February 24th:  Tom Vanella

At the Crab Feed, President Glenn called the meeting to order and asked Jim Patterson to give the invocation.

It appears that everyone did a good job selling tickets.  We were oversold at 301 tickets and had to set up additional tables.

Later in the meeting Bill Apger conducted the live auction, over a lot of noise.  It appeared that only the people in the front half of the room could hear him well enough to participate in the auction.  I don’t have the numbers yet, but it appeared that he did make the club some money.

Other than the above, the evening was spent eating crab, prawn, pasta and bread.  This was followed by cake.   See the photos below, for further information on what occurred.

Then the January 27th meeting:

Thanks to Jim Kirks for taking notes for me at the January 27th  meeting.

President Glenn called the meeting to order. Kent Jackson lead the pledge of allegiance and Rev. Jim gave the invocation.

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Joe Nock introduced his son John Nock and our speaker John Lucchesi

Dan Davis introduced Laura Joplin and Rick Barnett from the Chico Noon Club.

NEXT MEETING

Daryl Polk will present Robert Obrien III who will be presenting a program on racing pigeons…he has a video, and will probably bring one of his birds too.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

International Project

Norm Larson was invited to approach the bench. President Glenn gave Norm two ATM cards totaling $1500 to present to Sister Marie Moran for the Orphanage in Trujillo, Peru. Norm announced that as soon as Sister Maries knee is better and Sister Rosie’s visa problems are resolved, the two nuns will be back and invited to speak to Durham Rotarians. Andy Farrar is continuing to work on the Trujillo, Peru, Orphanage project.

Crab Feed

Pres. Glenn was pleased to share with Durham Rotarians that the Crab Feed netted $8,000.00. This is considerably more than in past years. Selling 300 tickets and the addition of the auction were significant factors. Pres. Glenn commended outstanding ticket sellers, volunteers who worked on the Crab Feed, and Craig Hastain, who manned the dishwasher for 1 ˝ hours following the Crab Feed. Pres. Glenn also praised the servers, set up volunteers, and the bar crew. A special commendation was given to Steve Greenwood and Chris Hatch for all the planning and organization for the successful event.

Then $11.00 was added to the Crab Feed revenue. It was the result of Bill Apger wagering that he could eat the entire cake that was left over from the Crab Feed. The cake actually ended up on top of the toolbox on Steve Greenwoods truck as Bill Apger only ate one slice from the cake.

Mike Wacker announced that there still was an item from the Crab Feed to auction off. The auction will be held at one of our Durham Rotary meetings when Biil Apger is present. Mike reported that the "Van Adventure for up to 12 Persons" is a $200 or greater value. Bid $200 or more and win a wonderful adventure trip to wineries, weddings, shopping, or whatever tickles your fancy. An example would be take 10 friends, your spouse and yourself on a Van Adventure to New Clairvaux Winery in Vina and another local winery followed by a no host lunch.

PETS

President-elect Mike Crump will be going to PETS and Pres. Glenn will be making a congratulations Mike banner for posting at PETS. Glenn would like some pictures of Mike to put on the banner. Please send pictures featuring Mike Crump to Pres. Glenn.

Quote from Paul Harris

Pres. Glenn quoted Rotary Founder Paul Harris. In summary the quote told how Rotary helped encourage its members through hard financial times that followed the Great Crash of 1929.

The District

The District Governor is looking for mentors.

Dave Davis is a candidate for District Governor, 2011-12.

Work Day

Pres. Glenn announced that he is still looking for ideas for the Rotary Community Work Day. He suggested that Rev. Jim might come up with some ideas for cleaning up Durham.

April 25th is a worldwide Rotarians at Work Day. Pres. Glenn invited ideas for a one

day work project for Durham Rotarians. Some of the suggestions were painting the auto

parts store and planting some attractive shrubs and flowers in front of the mini-storage

units across from  the Veterans Hall. Pres. Glenn probably didn’t take these suggestions

seriously.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Glenn recognized Clint Goss for his 51st wedding anniversary coming up February 1st. Clint was, and so was Norm Larson, pleased that Pres. Glenn plans for all the fellows who have been married more than 50 years, that the recognition will go on in reverse. Clint was recognized for $49.00 and said it was great.

Pres. Glenn auctioned off the umbrella that Jim Patterson left at the Crab Feed. Rev. Jim said it was a very good umbrella and paid $12.00 as his was the winning bid.

Jim Kirks announced that his daughter Dr. Cara Kirks Debley passed her gastrointestinal boards and is now a board certified gastroenterologist. Jim agreed to a $65.00 recognition and Pres. Glenn rang the bell ringer for him.

The Grinder was auctioned by Pres. Glenn. Norm Larson winning $55.00 bid aced out Rev. Jim’s bid of $50.00.

New Member Posting

Secretary KR Robertson reported that a special Board Meeting was held following the regular Durham Rotary meeting. Daniel E. Davey was proposed for membership by Daryle Polk and approved by the Board. KR requested that this be posted in "The Rowel."

PROGRAM

John Nock introduced John Lucchesi, President of Northern California National Bank, which was founded in March 2006. John’s banking career began at the Oroville Branch of Bank of America. His career continued the firm and he rose position of General Manager of Bank of America in Southeast Asia.

John Lucchesi noted that the banking industry is having trauma globally and the United States took the lead in screwing up the banking industry. The $700 million bailout changed from a stock purchase to debit purchase because buying stock was more socialism that the United States could take at the time. Government run companies tend to be the most inefficient. The problems following the bail out showed that many individuals have lost their sense of morals and integrity.

In regard to financial stocks, there are some Cadillac companies. Most of the world has general banks and, for example, there are only five banks in Japan. All are controlled by the Minister of Finance. This is what got Citi Bank in trouble. Community banks are a good long term investment.

Bank interest rates are low. The federal reserve bank directors are very concerned about inflation. FDIC insurance cost has doubled. There are 170-180 banks in the United States that are on the regulators watch list.

0% to 2% are current CD rates on the west coast. If a bank loans funds at 4%, there is very little to play with after FDIC insurance expense.

The outlook for the economy for 2009 is that it will be very, very difficult. We will be fortunate if we will be out of this situation by 2010 locally.

The bank bail out will cause inflation. Rates will go up by the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010. China holds trillions of dollars of United State debt. Loaning people $25 million with no conditions is unbelievable.

John Locassi mentioned some areas for thought and concern. There are 8,400 banks in the United States. It is not possible to nationalize all of them. An option would be to nationalize the top 20 banks, but this wouldnt be wise. In November 2008, the prices for housing in California and Florida dropped 18%. This was the worst decline in history.

Durham Rotarians thought it was appropriate that John Locassi was invited to sign a book entitled "The Holocaust" to be given in honor of his talk to Durham Intermediate School Library.
