VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Bruce Norlie introduced the visiting Rotarians at his table: Cindy Foor, Chico Noon Club, Bank Management; and Chuck Lohse, Chico Noon Club, Paper Farmer (actually now retired).

Mike Wacker introduced the visiting Rotarians at his table: Bill Moran, Chico Noon Club, Law; and Barry Sherwood, Chico Noon Club, Internet Services.

Kent Jackson introduced Craig Hastain of Bearing, Belt and Chain who is a guest of Dar Meyer.

Jane Ziad was asked a question by Pres. Glenn in lieu of introducing a visiting Rotarian. Glenn offered to ask an easy question for double or nothing. Jane was a good sport and agreed to try to answer the question. Unfortunately, Jane couldn’t recall what was the program last week and was recognized for $2.00. (hint:  electric cars).

BOARD MEETING

The Board of Directors, at their monthly meeting before tonight’s meeting, approved the application for membership of Craig Hastain, with a classification of Retail Bearing Sales.

NEXT MEETING

NOW PAY ATTENTION TO THIS.  The next meeting is a Monday Night Football meeting.  The meeting is at  Mountain Mike’s Pizza at 1722 Mangrove Avenue, Chico  It is MONDAY night, not Tuesday.  Dar has made the arrangements, and will have his chart for the football pool.  We will not be in the party room as someone else has already reserved the room.  We will be in the room with the big screen TV. Just look for Dar and his Football Pool chart.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Christmas Party

Dave Mulqueeney reminded members to get their donations to the silent auction to Dave for he and his wife to handle ahead of time.  KR Robertson urged Rotarians to bring items for the silent auction to Mt. Mikes on Monday.

Tell your spouse about it and get in on his or her calendar now.  Let’s do a better job of getting spouses and significant others to the party.  It is also a good time to bring a guest, with spouse or significant other, who would make a good member.

Crab Feed

Steve Greenwood announced that Crab Feed Tickets are still available. Durham Rotarians can turn in funds for tickets sold to Steve.

Remember each member will be responsible to for the purchase of 4 tickets.  Members are encouraged to take and sell more, but if not sold they must be returned by the Christmas Party meeting, December 16, 2008.  That does not include your required 4 tickets.  You cannot return those.  Any extra tickets you retain after December 16th, you have bought.  We are trying to avoid what happened last year, when it was thought that all tickets had been sold and then members returned unsold tickets too late to sell them.

A live auction is also being planned for the Crab Feed.  Start thinking about your donations to the auction.

Durham Christmas Tree Lighting

Pres. Glenn invited Durham Rotarians to attend the Christmas Tree Lighting at Durham Community Methodist Church where his wife Bonnie would be serving hot chocolate.

Durham Little League Umpires

Barry Sherwood invited Rotarians to become umpires for Durham Little League. There is an Umpire School available.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Bill Apger called for nominations for Rowel editor. Phil Price was nominated and elected unanimously.

Then Bill announced the slate of officers proposed by the Nominating Committee:

Treasurer: Steve Plume

Secretary: KR Robertson

Pres. Elect: Mike Crump

Pres. Elect/Elect: Jim Kirks

We also need to elect a member of the Board of Trustees for the Foundation to replace Roy Ellis, whose three year term expires on June 30, 2009.  So think about nominees.

New Member Proposed

The following has been proposed as a new member:

Craig Hastain, of Bearing, Belt and Chain Co., with a classification of Retail Bearing Sales.  His sponsor is Dar Meyer.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Glenn called on Bruce Norlie who responded that he had a new I-phone and that he went to the street car races in Calistoga.  Bruce was recognized for $30.00.

Steve Plume was asked by Pres. Glenn if an important event was coming up?  Steve answered that his 11th wedding anniversary will be on December 7th and Steve volunteered to be recognized for $11.00.

Roy Ellis was asked to stand by Pres. Glenn.  Roy admitted that his birthday will be on December 12th and declined to have a song and agreed to be recognized for $10.00. This made Roy a bell ringer and Pres. Glenn rang the Rotary bell for Roy.

Pres. Glenn inquired of Rev. Jim if there was something important coming up this month? Rev. Jim responded that his wife has endured 44 years of marriage and he might take her to a high class restaurant like McDonalds for a night out on the town. Rev. Jim was recognized for $44.00 and advised that the Durham Rotary Christmas Party Dinner might be a more appropriate venue for an evening out on December 16th.

Mike Wacker was asked how proud he was at the birth in Walnut Creek of his 8th grandchild.  Mike said he was proud enough to be recognized for $50.00.

Pres. Glenn than called on Jim Kirks and asked what he did on his Thanksgiving holiday.  Jim described a visit to the new California Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate park and the problems encountered due to the throngs of people waiting to enter the Museum.  Jim was recognized for $20 and advised Rotarians to visit the California Academy of Sciences, but not on the day after Thanksgiving.

PROGRAM

Although Pres. Glenn announced that there was no program this evening, Ged Andrusaitus responded that Barry Sherwood had volunteered to give a mini-program on "How to Make A lot of Money on the Stock Market." Barry took a class on how the Stock Market works and now trades in options. Barry found that inverse funds, short funds and buying options of a great variety is a good way to balance one’s portfolio in a bear market. He pointed out that one’s broker needs to know how to cove a call. Naked puts are a good way to buy a stock one is interested in.

Although playing the stock market is a form of gambling, it is different from playing games of chance in a casino. If the stock market game is not going the way you want, one can sell and not lose all one’s money as is the case in games of risk.
