Pres. Glenn called the meeting to order. Dave Mulqueeney lead the flag salute and Rev. Jim gave the Invocation. He prefaced the prayer with an update on Cathy Liu who is striving to relearn the English language as she has aphasia due to the accident that injured her brain.

Pres. Glenn again announced that guests would go first in the line for the buffet and that this would be something that would follow for the rest of the year.

July 29th:  District Governor, Jim Campbell and his wife Linda will be visiting.

August 5th:  Board meeting at 5:00 pm.

August 5th:    ?????

August 12th:  ?????

August 19th:  ?????

Ged Andrusaitis asked all members to suggest any programs of interest for future dates.

Ged reports that the BCCC will not be available 9/2, 9/23, 11/4 and 12/9.  Any ideas on where we can meet.

Perhaps Dar can do a Football meeting on one of the last two.

Again I spent the week in Yreka.  Jim Kirks took notes for me for this Rowel.  Thank you, Jim.

This Rowel is also a little late because I didn’t get back until Monday.

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Following dinner, Chris Hatch introduced two guests from the Chico Noon Club, Chuck Lohse and Dan Corbin.

Jim Kirks, with the help from Rev. Jim, introduced Fred Muller, Chico Sunrise, five times Paul Harris Fellow and Rotary District Officer for 3 years. Fred received a round of applause for his support of the Paul Harris Fellowship program and then all the guests received a round of applause.

NEXT MEETING

District Governor, Jim Campbell and his wife Linda will be visiting.

Pres. Glenn announced there will be a Board meeting at 4:45 pm next Tuesday to meet with the District Governor in the Butte Creek Country Club Board Room.   All members of the board must be present.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CLUB BOARD MEETING

Pres. Glenn mentioned the "Polio Plus" newsletter. There were only 312 polio cases reported in 2007 and most of the cases were in just two countries, Kenya and Nigeria.

Repeating last week’s announcement from President Glenn, there will be a Durham Rotary Board Meeting the 1st Tuesday of each month at 5 pm. All are invited to attend.

                                                 HARVEST FESTIVAL

Get the Durham Rotary 2008 Harvest Festival Sponsorship Forms you are responsible for back to Steve Greenwood as soon as possible.  They are late now and not much time is left.  They need to be back by early July so we can get the T-Shirts ordered and the lists of sponsors printed.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Glenn told Bill Apger that he missed Bill at the last meeting. Bill promised Pres. Glenn that he would make up and several Rotarians wondered if that passed the Four Way Test and Bill with the help of fellow Rotarians was able to recite all four parts of the Test. Pres. Glenn recognized Bill for $10.00.

Pres. Glenn called on Mike Crump who explained he missed the last meeting due to work. Pres. Glenn advised Mike that he saw him on TV at the meeting, but noticed that Mike did not have a Durham Rotary T-shirt on.   Pres. Glenn recognized Mike for $5.00 since Mike was helping the County Board of Supervisors deal with issues involving the fires.

Pres. Glenn asked Roy Ellis if the Comanche ride was a success? Roy explained that they were out to help protect people from the fire, but they didn’t see any fire, just some smoke. Pres. Glenn recognized Roy for $25.00.

Next, Pres. Glenn called on Chris Hatch as Chris wasn’t present last week. Chris was running his dogs. Pres. Glenn recognized Chris for $10.00. Chris shared with the Club Members that his dogs qualified for the National Amateur meet and although they didn’t win, Chris was pleased to participate in the meet. Chris volunteered an additional $30.00, but Pres. Glenn declined Chris’ generous offer.

DRAWING

There was no drawing tonight.

PROGRAM

Pres. Glenn opened the Club Assembly and announced that the first item was the budget. Club Members suggested including the Durham Rotary Foundation in the budget. It was suggested that $500-$1,000 be put in the International Service segment of the budget for Paul Harris Fellowship matching funds.

Pres. Glenn announced that Tom Knowles was unable to be present to report on Club Service. However, Pres. Glenn wants as a first order of business to have the Durham Rotary Club sign put up.

Jim Patterson spoke on Membership.  Bruce Miller’s father wishes to join Durham Rotary.  First Fred Miller needs to have a classification and join the club. Then the matter of Club 85 eligibility can be addressed.  Kent Carlton, a former Chico Rotarian, is a possible candidate for membership in Durham Rotary.  Pres. Glenn stressed that every member needs to understand the membership process.  He would like the process put in written form to be shared with the membership.

Mike Crump reported on Community Service. He has a list of pending projects. Pres. Glenn said that there is a need to get the Raviks Park project completed.

Roy Ellis is responsible for Vocational Service. He is working toward having a career night for Durham High School students in 2008-09. In regard to Camp Royal, 2 to 4 students work well, but trying to transport 6 kids in one vehicle would be a problem. There just wouldn’t be room for the kids and all there baggage.

Roy shared that the Durham Rotary Foundation was founded in hopes that Rotarians would include the Foundation in their wills.

In regard to International Service, Andy Farrar asked if Rotarians wanted to do an international project since International is part of Rotary’s name, or do members believe that every dollar raised in Durham should stay in Durham? Andy will check with the District Governor about possible international projects as there may be some matching funds available or we might be able to combine our efforts with three or four other Rotary clubs in the area.

Ged Andrusaitus spoke to the issue of Programs for Durham Rotary. He handed out a list with members assigned program dates. He suggested that members think about people who have interesting hobbies and invite them to come an speak.

Steve Greenwood distributed a list of Harvest festival committees.

KR Robertson reported he had only heard from one person about the Bylaws. He will be checking with the District Governor about some of the questions he has about the Bylaws.

Pres. Glenn advised the members that he wants a policy on how we handle requests for funds. He wishes to avoid embarrassing members and/or speakers who seek funds from our group.
