RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Glenn called on Tom Knowles and mentioned that he noticed that Tom didn’t have his Rotary name badge on. Tom explained that his badge is in his other car. Pres. Glenn recognized Tom for $10.00 for removing his badge from Rotarydom.

Pres. Glenn next asked Steve Greenwood to be recognized for missing last Tuesday’s meeting. Steve explained that his family was under precautionary evacuation due to the fire and was unable to attend Durham Rotary last week. Pres. Glenn thanked Steve for presiding at the July 1st meeting and wanted to thank him again in person since Steve wasn’t present last week.

Then Pres. Glenn recognized Joe Nock for missing the July 8th meeting. Joe explained that he forgot about the meeting last week and Pres. Glenn noted that since Joe is a member of Club 85, Joe was excused.

DRAWING

Jim Edwards was not present to win this drawing, since he is no longer a member.

PROGRAM

Ged Andrusaitus explained that Roy Ellis was unable to be present and that the Camp Royal program became his by default as Roy’s assistant. Ged invited Carter Knowles to lead off and tell the Club some humorous things about Camp Royal. Carter explained that due to the fires, Cal Fire wanted Camp Royal campers out an hour early. Unfortunately, the bus driver overslept and then drove past the camp and so everyone ended up leaving Camp Royal two hours later than scheduled. Then the bus had to pull over due to overheating. 10 minutes later the bus stopped in Hayfork and the driver put 2 gallons of oil into the bus and the oil started burning off and smoke filled the bus. Then the bus driver turned off the air conditioning and turned on the heater to try to cool down the overheated engine. The bus went about six miles in two hours. Then a mechanic was brought to inspect the bus and reported that the head gasket had blown and it was unfixable. Four hours were spent by the side of the road. Carter and the campers visited with friends and played frisbee. Then Weaverville Rotarians took campers to Shasta High School in Redding where parents met the campers and took them home. The Durhamites were about five hours late getting home.

Camp Royal was a great experience and Carter thanked Durham Rotary for sending him. He learned that there is more to people than meets the eye. The greatest activity was the rope course zip line. Team building involved getting everyone over the wall. The wall was symbolic of the problems in life and getting over them.

Brita Voris really appreciated going to Camp Royal. The accommodations are very basic, they slept outdoors. There are very rustic showers. Campers were in nature the entire time and enjoyed seeing deer walk by. Blaine Hensley was the main presenter. He is a motivational speaker and spoke on leadership through self. Chau Yoder lead a meditation session and it was very refreshing. Brita loved most meeting people. Brita shared that they have a homework project to develop a community service project. They decided to raise funds for Humboldt Fire Relief. The goal is $1000.00. The campers are holding bake sales invited Rotarians to come to their next sale at the Farmer’s Market.

Megan Godsil will be Interact President and Activities Chair for the Associated Student Body. Campers bonded very fast. She learned about the goofing grin and how to step back and take a breath when faced with a stressful situation. She enjoyed the CDs for relaxation. Chigong, an introduction to Tai Chi was helpful. Megan mentioned that there were bonfires every night. The lighting storm arrived the last night of Camp Royal and the campers saw orange fire on the tree tops. Megan learned that in addition to the Golden Rule to treat others as you would like to be treated, there is the Platinum Rule: Treat others as they want to be treated.

Tom Knowles shared with Durham Rotarians that he joined Rotary in 1992, the same year his son Carter was born. Over the 17 years that Tom has been in Rotary, he would hear about Camp Royal each year and learn what a great experience it was for the attendees. It was wonderful to have his own son go to Camp Roy this year and today was his son’s 17th birthday.
