REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Steve Plume gave a treasurer’s report.  He reported that there is currently $21,624 in the Club checking account, $20,000 in a CD and $4,231 in the Foundation checking account.  Much of it will go to Scholarships in the next few months.  So to work on the Harvest Festival.

The Carnitas Feed netted $830.77.

Bruce Norlie reported that the Thrashing Bee was a success.  They had the largest attendance yet.  He thanked the members who helped him with the parking, which has become a Durham Rotary project.  He reports that Tom Knowles will take over the parking next year.

President Daryl passed around a thank you card from the 4H member whose animal we purchased at the Silver Dollar Fair.  He also passed around thank you cards from scholarship recipients with their pictures.

Ged is the Program Director for the Club next year, taking those duties over from Jim Kirks who has done it for 3 years.  Thanks Jim!  Ged gave some thoughts on finding programs and is asking for programs for July.  He will be appointing the July chairperson and the persons responsible for July programs shortly.

President-Elect Glenn reports that Steve Plume will remain the Club Treasurer next year.  Similarly, K.R. will remain the Club Secretary next year.  Mike Crump and Tom Knowles will be co-chairpersons for Community Service.  Roy will remain the Youth Projects Chairperson and Dan Davis the Foundation Chairperson.

CLUB BYLAWS

K. R. has completed a draft of proposed bylaws for the Club.  It is being reviewed by his Bylaws Committee.  Upon completion of that review, the proposed bylaws, as amended by the committee, will be presented to the Club for adoption.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Steve again asked that members get the Durham Rotary 2008 Harvest Festival Sponsorship Forms they are responsible for back to him by the end of June.  Glenn passed around a list of past sponsors with the names of the members responsible for contacting them.  The list shows there past contribution and which ones we already have a banner for.  Glenn asks that you let him know if one of the sponsors is yours and your name is not listed as the contact person, so he can update the list.  Please get it done now.  This is were we make a lot of our money.  They need to be back by early July so we can get the T-Shirts ordered and the lists of sponsors printed.

PROGRAM

The program was a Club Assembly with President-Elect Glenn leading.  He indicated that his goals for next year fall into the following categories:

1.  Membership-we must increase our membership.  We do some major projects compared to other clubs our size, but we need bodies to help.

 2.  Community Projects- We haven’t done a community project in a couple of years and need to come up with one.  More below.

3.  Rotary Foundation – His goal is to get all members to the Paul Harris Fellowship level, including himself.

4.  Club Organization – We need to formalize our club operations including an audit and find out where we are on required tax information returns.

Regarding a community project this year Mike Crump presented the following list of suggested projects:

Proposed community Service projects-2008

1) Landscape Hwy 99 / Durham Pentz Road Interchange (Oak trees)

2) Landscape Midway (trees) south of Durham

3) Durham Community sign on Hwy 99 at Durham Pentz Rd Interchange

4) Bike/Pedestrian access from schools to Midway Park (without having to walk/ride on the Midway)

5) Refurbish Kitchen at Memorial Hall

6) Replace sidewalk (12 ft. wide) on Midway between Durham and Campbell Sts with new 6 ft sidewalk and landscape planter strip.

There was also discussion of completing the concrete and related work still needed at Ravekes Park, putting a path in from the high school to the ball field and saving the “Graduation Oak”.

Members are asked for their thoughts on a project for this next year.

Regarding the club, there was much interest in doing a Club retreat at Lake Almanor, as was done for several years, soon.  There seemed to be the greatest interest in Friday night with a Saturday retreat and only those staying over Saturday night who want to.

There was also some discussion over the Rotary Avenues of Service and what they are and mean.  So, from the Rotary International web site is the following:

For years, Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self has been channeled through the four Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of club activity. To get started on a project, think broadly about how your club and its members could contribute within each avenue.

Club Service

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of Rotary clubs.

Vocational Service

Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process.

Community Service

Community Service is the opportunity  Rotary clubs have to implement club projects and activities that improve life in the local community.

International Service

International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to PolioPlus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries.

Over the next few weeks I will expand on each Avenue with information from the RI web site.
