REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

K. R. Updates From Jim Kirks

3/3/08;  Please pass on to Durham Rotarians that KR was readmitted to Enloe Hospital today.  He is in room 104.   KR has experienced another episode of GI tract bleeding.  It is not as serious as the previous episode.   His wife Sharon told me that KR is in good spirits.

3/6/08: When I stopped to see KR at Enloe Medical Center late this afternoon, Sharon, his wife, was getting him ready for hospital staff to wheelchair him from his room.   The discharge papers had already been signed.   KR is in good spirits and is leaving the hospital in better shape that the previous times he has been discharged.   Usually Mike Wacker sees KR being escorted from Enloe, but I guess it was my turn this time.   I will be stopping by to see KR on Saturday.   The Robertsons are very fond of the strawberries sold at the Farmers Market.   They are large and juicy and grown in San Diego County.   Hopefully there will be a good supply of the berries when I stroll into the market Saturday morning.

CLUB BYLAWS

When K. R. Robertson gets back on his feet he will want your comments about the Bylaws he distributed in December, which you have, I am sure, reviewed as he asked.  We cannot find the Bylaws for the Club and need to adopt new ones.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Roy Ellis introduced the Students of the Month for December and March.  They were Anna Wheeler for December and Richard Davis for March.  They then each introduced each other.  It is amazing what these young people are involve in and still get enough studying done to maintain high grade averages.    It should also be mentioned that Richard’s father Pete Davis was also present.  What happened to January and February?  Roy will track them down and get them at a meeting in the near future.  With the things they are involved in, it is surprising that they can take time out to come to a meeting.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Steve advises that the Harvest Festival Committee meetings will be held as needed after our regular Rotary meetings.  He indicates that all the committee chairpersons know what they have to do, so start doing it.

District 5160 Conference

A Rotary Conference, Golf Event, Poker Tournament, a Rotary Club Hospitality Party in the theme of the Prospectors (think Gold Rush era, Paint Your Wagon).  The pricing is reasonable, the lodging is inexpensive.  There is a 25% discount for registering before December 31, 2007.  Go to www.rotary5160.org and get all the details.

Lodging is limited.  Call now for room reservations:

NEW MEMBER POSTING

Barbara Gaskin, Superintendent of the Durham Unified School District.  Sponsored by Jim Patterson.  Her classification will be “School Administration”.

If anyone can find Dar, it is the intention to induct his new member, Dan Becket, next week.

RECOGNITIONS

There is not much activity in March.  There was nothing for President Daryl to recognize anyone for.  He did conduct an auction of the Grinder for March.  Jim Edwards started the bidding at $35.  For a while it looked like he was going to get it.  Finally Roy Ellis raised the bid to $50.  Then Tom Knowles bid $55 and got it for that.  He mentioned that his name was in the newspaper and his wife was expecting.

PROGRAM

Jim Patterson introduced Rick Landis, currently a member of the Paradise Club, but formerly a member of our club.  He introduced Barbara Gaskin, the new Superintendent of the Durham Unified School District.  She replaced Penny.  Rick acted as the interim superintendent after Penny left and was part of the selection committee.  They had 18 candidates which were narrowed down to Barbara.  Barbara spoke about her ideas for the school district.

DRAWING

Jim Patterson was here to win the “Must Be Present To Win” drawing.
