REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

K. R. Update From Jim Kirks

1.       K. R. Robertson is reported to have severely injured his hand and is Enloe Hospital, Room 312A.  He has had one surgery and will have another.

2.       KR has appreciated the visits and phone calls from Durham Rotarians.   His doctor has released him to go home Friday.   KR's wife Sharon will be home Friday, Saturday and Sunday.   On Monday, KR's brother should arrive from Ceres to stay with KR while Sharon is at work.   I think all the Durham Rotarians know where KR resides as we have had several demotion parties at their beautiful residence.   KR enjoyed the copy of the latest "Rowel" that I printed out for him. (Email dated 2/21/08).

3.       Sharon Robertson just called.   KR was taken to the emergency room at Enloe yesterday and the doctor found significant bleeding in his intestinal tract.   KR is now in the ICU at Enloe and Sharon and his brother are going to check on him this morning.  Sharon will call me if there are any changes.   KR's hands have been healing very well and this development was very unexpected.   It is estimated that KR will be hospitalized for 3 or 4 days.   Please keep KR and Sharon in your thoughts and prayers.  (Email dated 2/26/08).

4.       This morning KR was transferred from the ICU to 208A at Enloe Medical Center.   His wife Sharon and his brother were in the room with KR when I stopped by to visit late this afternoon.   They both told me that KR is doing much better.  I know that KR has appreciated the visits by Durham Rotarians and now that he is in a regular hospital room, he is able to have company. I'm not sure whether KR is expected to be discharged to go home Friday, Sat. or Sunday.  I'll let you know when I get more info from Sharon.  (Email dated 2/27/08).

CLUB BYLAWS

When K. R. Robertson gets back on his feet he will want your comments about the Bylaws he distributed in December, which you have, I am sure, reviewed as he asked.  We cannot find the Bylaws for the Club and need to adopt new ones.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Yes, it is getting to be that time of year.  The Crab Feed was a month ago.  I assume that Steve will have a Harvest Festival Committee Meeting at the Italian Cottage on the Skyway sometime this month, but I don’t have a date yet.

District 5160 Conference

A Rotary Conference, Golf Event, Poker Tournament, a Rotary Club Hospitality Party in the theme of the Prospectors (think Gold Rush era, Paint Your Wagon).  The pricing is reasonable, the lodging is inexpensive.  There is a 25% discount for registering before December 31, 2007.  Go to www.rotary5160.org and get all the details.

Lodging is limited.  Call now for room reservations:

NEW MEMBER POSTING

Barbara Gaskin, Superintendent of the Durham Unified School District.  Sponsored by Jim Patterson.  Her classification will be “School Administration”.

If anyone can find Dar, it is the intention to induct his new member, Dan Becket, next week.

RECOGNITIONS

Clint Goss contributed $50 for his 50th Anniversary.

Dave Jessen also had an anniversary and contributed $31.

Tom Vanella’s anniversary was yesterday so he contributed $47 for his 47th anniversary.

Your editor then volunteered a deal to cover his 49th anniversary in January and his purchase of a new automobile, also in January, all of which had been missed by President Daryl.  The deal was $44 new money plus a bill he had for table cloths (Harvest Festival and Crab Feed) in the amount of $56, for a total of $100.  He got to ring the bell.

PROGRAM

The program was by member Steve Plume.  Dino Corbin, the planned program had the flu, so Steve stepped in.  Steve spoke about his experiences as a helicopter pilot, under fire, in Viet Nam and the effect that has on one when he comes home.  He talked about his reaction to common things when he first returned, such as headlights, unrecognized noises, etc.  It was very interesting, particularly since I had a partner a few years ago who was also an army helicopter pilot, under fire, in Viet Nam.

DRAWING

Chris Hatch was not here to win the “Must Be Present To Win” drawing.
