VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

President Daryle arrived in time to ask Dar Meyer to introduce the visitors at Dar’s table. Dar seemed to have trouble introducing Walt Schafer, however others present added that Walt was Past President of Chico Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Dar introduced our speaker Kim Schafer successfully, but managed to forget the guest to his right, Jan Wacker.  Fortunately, Mike Wacker was right there and reminded Dar to introduce Jan. Even though there was ringing of water glasses and some suggestions of recognizing Dar by Durham Rotarians, Pres. Daryle passed up the opportunity to recognize Dar

NEXT MEETING

I believe that Roy Ellis will have the Camp Royal Team.  At least that was what was scheduled when the schedule was made up last summer.  I have heard nothing further.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CRAB FEED

The crab feed was held last Saturday.  The tables looked to be full so I assume we got most of the tickets sold.  There was no report tonight, but I expect one at the next meeting.  There a few pictures of setting up at the end of this Rowel.  Mal-functioning batteries (which had been charged that morning) prevented more.

CLUB BYLAWS

K. R. Robertson asks that you get your comments to him about the Bylaws he distributed in December, which you have, I am sure, reviewed as he asked.  We will eventually discuss them.  We cannot find the Bylaws for the Club and need to adopt new ones.

District 5160 Conference

Stan Thompson reminded members of this Conference.

A Rotary Conference, Golf Event, Poker Tournament, a Rotary Club Hospitality Party in the theme of the Prospectors (think Gold Rush era, Paint Your Wagon).  The pricing is reasonable, the lodging is inexpensive.  There is a 25% discount for registering before December 31, 2007.  Go to www.rotary5160.org and get all the details.

Lodging is limited.  Call now for room reservations:

NEW MEMBER POSTING

Greg Casey, sponsored by Clint Goss, John Rivera, sponsored by Dan Davis and Dan Becket, sponsored by Dar Meyer have been published long enough.  When are they being inducted?

RECOGNITIONS

President Daryl called on Rev. Jim Patterson because the tee-totaling pastor asked Daryle to buy a drink for a guest at the recent Durham Rotary Crab Feed.  Jim’s answer was "When in Rome, do as the Romans." Rev. Jim contributed $10.00 to the Club and announced that it would buy four drinks.

PROGRAM

Dar Meyer introduced Kimberly Schafer as our speaker. Ms. Schafer attended Chico High and Butte College. She graduated in 1982 from CSU, Chico in psychology and business. Kim completed a Masters of Science degree in preventive medicine from Ohio State University.

Kim is the Administrative Director of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine’s Center for AIDS Research and the AIDS Research Institute. Ms. Schafer‘s Power Point presentation topic was "The HIV/AIDS Pandemic: An Overview."

The UCSD Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is one of 19 national CFARs funded by the National Institutes of Health. The mission of the CAR is to develop improved vaccines and therapies for HIV infection and associated diseases through:

Basic research in the areas of molecular pathogenesis and immunopathogenesis.

Utilization of insights from basic research to develop pre-clinical and clinical trials of therapies and vaccines,

Furthering clinical research to address fundamental scientific and practical medical issue, and

Providing leadership and serving as a regional resource to coordinate, stimulate and cross-fertilize all of the above to foster synergism, economies of scale and novel and creative approaches.

HIV/Aids is a pandemic spreading around the world. The greatest number of individuals with HIV/Aids are in Sub-Sahara Africa. The HIV/Aids virus first was transmitted to humans in Africa in 1959. In the United States the first HIV/Aids diagnoses in humans was in 1981.

There is a similar virus that lives in a chimpanzee specie native to the Cameroons. It is thought that the chimpanzee virus infected hunters exposed to the animal’s blood or infected people who ate the chimpanzees. Today HIV/Aids is the 4th largest cause of death worldwide.

The United State federal government is spending $23 billion on HIV/Aids programs. It will be many years before a vaccine will be available as the HIV/Aids virus is constantly mutating.

There are promising studies of male circumcision in Africa. The study showed that circumcision was very good in reducing HIV/Aids.

Microbicides are desirable for treating HIV/Aids.

What people can do to limit their exposure to HIV/Aids virus:

Practice safe sex.

Get tested! CDC recommends that all adults get tested as part of routine medical care.

Talk about getting tested.

Support local HIV/Aids research through volunteer service and donations.

Write your Congressional Representatives.

Mike Wacker asked if mosquitos carry HIV/Aids since they carry blood from one creature to another. Ms. Schafer responded that it is not possible because the mosquitos are more exposed to air.

The CFARs are very collegial and share information among the 19 CFAR centers.

The Gates Foundation has given 100s of millions of dollars to AIDS programs.

To obtain a copy of Kimberly Schafer’s Power Point presentation, contact Walt Schafer. He will e-mail the slides to anyone who contacts him.

DRAWING

Andy Farrar was present to win the “Must Be Present” to win drawing.  He donated it back to the Club.
