The UCSD Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is one of the 19 national CFARs funded by the National Institutes of Health.  The mission of the CFAR is to develop improved vaccines and therapies for HIV infection and associated diseases through:

·          Basic research in the areas of molecular pathogenesis and immunopathogenesis.

·          Utilization of insights from basic research to develop pre-clinical and clinical trials of therapies and vaccines.

·          Furthering clinical research to address fundamental scientific and practical medical issues.

·          Providing leadership and serving as a regional resource to coordinate, stimulate and cross-fertilize all of the above to foster synergism, economies of scale and novel and creative approaches.

Ms. Schafer has worked at UCSD School of Medicine for nearly 20 years and has been with the Center for AIDS Research for more than 4 years.  She also served Director of Clinical Operations of the Alzheimer Disease Cooperative Study.  She has co-authored a number of medical articles including in the New England Journal of Medicine.

After attending Chico High School and Butte College, Ms. Schafer graduated in 1982 from CSU, Chico in psychology and business.  She then completed a masters degree in preventive medicine from Ohio State University.

Her topic for this program is: The HIV/AIDS Pandemic: An Overview.

RECOGNITIONS

President Daryl tried to recognize Bill Apger and Andy Farrar for birthdays this month.  When Bill pointed out that his birthday is not in January and the calendar on the Club’s web site is in error, Daryl tried to fine your editor for the error.  However, your editor’s calendar is correct and a copy was given to Daryl last meeting.  It is not the calendar on the web site.

Anyway, it was Andy’s birthday and he offered to pay $20 if Bill Apger sang “Happy Birthday” to hims.  Bill did.

PROGRAM

Joe Nock, with the assistance of his son John, presented Colleen Aguiar from the Butte County Farm Bureau.  She spoke about the Farm Bureau, a volunteer organization, that provides assistance to local farmers through many programs including advocacy, following farm issues, a Ag Alert publication, insurance, environmental matters, seminars, etc.  Regarding the recent storm she said that there has been about a $30,000,000 loss of almond trees.

DRAWING

Clint Goss was not here to draw his own name.  Glenn Pulliam did draw Clint’s name in the “Must Be Present” to win drawing.
