President Daryl Polk opened the meeting back at BCCC for the first time this month.  He asked Dan Davis to lead the Pledge of Allegiance, which he did.  Jim Patterson then gave the invocation including thanks for good weather and good help to produce a very successful Harvest Festival.

FUTURE MEETINGS:

October 2nd:  Dan Davis at the Dump.

October 9th:  No Meeting.  Columbus Day travel day.

October 16th:  Roy Ellis

October 22nd (Monday):  Monday Night Football at Mountain Mike’s.  The Paradise Club will visit.

October 30th: Chris Hatch

January 29th:  Dar Meyer will present  Kim Schafer, daughter of Walt Schafer.

Sorry about the delay in last week’s Rowel.  It was done last Friday  morning, but the number of photographs (mine and Kent’s) of the Harvest Festival in it, apparently was more than current email technology could handle.  It wasn’t until I had time to break it into 5 parts and email it to Jen in 5 separate emails last night, that he could get it, put it back together, and publish it.

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Dan Davis, Roy Ellis, Mike Wacker and Tom Knowles were asked to introduce the visiting Rotarians.  Introduced were Jim Rosendahl and Al Lotspeich of the Sunrise Club, Chuck Loshe of the Chico Club and Donna Buzzard of the Paradise Club.

Roy also introduced Ged Andrusaitis as a guest.  Ged was formerly a member of the club, helps at the Harvest Festival and is being worked on to rejoin.

Tom introduced Joe Hubbard as a guest.

NEXT MEETING

NOW PAY ATTENTION TO THIS.  The next meeting is at the Butte County Dump on Neal Road, just off of highway 99.  The entrance gate will be closed.  Enter the exit gate and go the the new triple wide, which appears to be to the left after you enter.  We will first (because it will get dark) have a tour of the Dump and the new technology being applied to our garbage, etc.  Then we will have dinner back in the triple wide after the tour.  Because the tour will be first, don’t be late.  This should be interesting.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

District 5160 Foundation Day

Rotary Foundation Day at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday, October 6, 2007. Includes Keynote Address by Past RI President Rajendra K. Saboo (1991-92), Silent Auction, and more.  Park Opens Early, at 8:30 am, for Rotarians and Guests for Special Foundation Program including Rotary Project Exhibits.

RECOGNITIONS

Chris Hatch celebrated his 40th Anniversary and was recognized in the amount of $40.00

Jim Kirks paid $10.00 for his birthday, without a song.

Steve Plume was having his birthday today and wanted a song from the whole club, which he got and contributed $7.00.

Mike Crump was assessed $40 for closing the Hagen Lane crossing of the railroad track interfering with Norm Larson’s operations.

PROGRAM

The Program was a Club Assembly on the Harvest Festival.  Steve Greenwood led the discussion.  First he called on Dan Davis who gave his preliminary estimate of the income.  He indicated that it appears that we grossed between $37,000 and $40,000 and will likely net over $20,000 for the first time.

Dan stated that we sold 756 breakfasts, 718 tri-tip lunches, and 366 chicken dinners, all of which represent an increase.

Dan also discuss the cashier station operations.  There was always a long line, but the kitchen probably could not serve faster so a third cashier would probably not help. It was propose splitting the two cashiers next year and allow room for people to get around people that cannot decide what they want.

Steve Plume and Tom Knowles discussed parking.  It went pretty well but they had suggestions for some improvements next year.

It was suggested that we can raise the beer prices next year.

It was noted that we, with our limited membership, could not have done it without the help of the Interact Club, the Durham Swim Team, the Boy Scouts,  the Durham High School Cheerleaders (who soldover $1,000 in Raffle tickets before the Festival).  Dan has about $2,000 in checks to deliver to the groups that helped.

I could not have handled the condiments table at lunch without the help of several Interact members.  One also was need to work in the Kitchen and another the parking.

All in all, the Harvest Festival ran smother this year and was the most successful yet.

The following were the winners of the raffle:

1st Wendy Oceguedy - $500.00

2nd Stan Potoski - $250.00

3rd  Brian Dowdy - $250.00

Must  Be Present To Win Drawing

None this week.  Clint was missing and the meeting was late concluding so we didn’t want to wait for someone else to find it.

Cathy Liu  Update from Jen

Dear friends,                                                                                                 Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Cathy reached another significant milestone today.  She is discharged from UCD Med. Center this morning and she walked out of the hospital by herself with us by her side.

We have leased a two bedroom duplex next to UCD Med. Center.  This place is quiet and is about 7 minutes walk for Pam or me to the main hospital.  Here is Cathy’s new address:

Cathy Liu

3773 Miller Way

Sacramento, CA 95817

Cathy’s immediate needs on rehabilitation are transferred to a program called Rehab. Without Walls.  It is a program that provides therapeutic treatments in patient’s own home.  Many people believe patients with neurological rehabilitation needs do better in a normalized surrounding.  It is a costly program and was not covered by her insurance policy.  Cathy was offered the possibility of this program earlier by the management of Internal Medicine department at UCD Med. Center.  They worked very hard in the last few weeks to include this new program into Cathy’s insurance policy and it finally materialized yesterday, the day before Cathy is discharged.  We were told that there will be an evaluation in about 6 weeks to see if Cathy’s can be transitioned to UCDMC’s outpatient rehab. program for the long haul.

Cathy needs 24 hour supervision for the near future.  Her main challenges are her right arm and her speech.  We were taught by her speech pathologist the following:

  • Face her when we speak to her so that she can read our lips to make it easier for her,
  • Slow down our speech just a bit but not too slow as Cathy is still an intelligent adult and does not want to be treated as a child
  • Encourage her to use full sentences when speaking so that she doesn’t become an one word speaker
  • Cathy knows what she wants to say but may express it differently.  We need to evaluate the context in order to derive and confirm what she really meant.  For example, Cathy wanted me to “turn off the light” one night when we were leaving and it took us awhile to figure out that she really meant for us to “close the door”.  We figured this one out because the light is already turned off and the light switch is right by the door.

We left the hospital with some degree of ambivalence.  We felt we were passengers in a bus in the past.  All Cathy’s needs are monitored and taken care of while she is in the hospital.  We were just there for the ride.  And now, we are driving ourselves.  We know where we want to be but it is a far away place we have never been before.  However, we believe with your support and prayer, we will reach the destination and it will be a worthwhile journey.

Jen, Pam, Cathy and Grace

P. S.  Cathy read this update and added her own name next to Pam by herself.
