President Daryl Polk opened the meeting at the Durham Park. Norm Larson led the Pledge of Allegiance and the Reverend Jim Patterson then gave the invocation, praying for the success of the Harvest Festival.  Hamburgers and Hot Dogs were cooked on the grill.  After dinner the members went into a planning session for the Harvest Festival, which was the purpose of the meeting.

FUTURE MEETINGS:

September 16th:  The Harvest Festival.  All must attend.

September 18th:  No meeting (the Harvest Festival was the meeting of record).

September 25th:  Harvest Festival Club Assembly

January 29th:  Dar Meyer will present  Kim Schafer, daughter of Walt Schafer.

Kent Jackson and I went to Costco to shop for food, plates, knives, forks, napkins, zip-lock bags, beer cups (red again this year), ketchup, mustard, potato chips (the go with the Tri-tip as well as the hot dogs), etc.  That was $550.  We did it again Thursday morning at Cash & Carry for another $250.  It was only $15 at Safeway this morning.  Still will pick up 504 dinner rolls (14 bags of 36each) at Costco Saturday morning.

In any event, since we went shopping I have nothing further to report about the meeting.

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting is the Harvest Festival, at the Durham Park, on Sunday, September 16th.  Be there.  With the membership as small as it is, we need every member to pitch in.  The Work Schedule is at the end of the Rowel.  After Kent and I spent $800 we need to make money to cover that and next year’s scholarships.  As El Jefe says: “Its for the children”.

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

There were no visiting Rotarians.  However, Tom Knowles had his wife, Sara, and his children, Zoe and Theodore as guests

Cathy Liu  Update from Jen and Grace (mostly).

Dear friends,                                                                                                 Sunday, September 9th, 2007

(Jen) Cathy continues to do well in rehabilitation and the doctors and therapists are treating her as aggressive as she can take them.  Her daily rehabilitation duration has been increased from 3 to 5 hours since our last update.  Cathy’s efforts and aggressive therapeutic sessions have resulted in surprising improvements.  She can now get in and out of  bed and her wheelchair by herself with minimum assistance.  She can also walk about 50 yards by herself unaided without taking a break.  All the tests seem to verify that Cathy is still strong mentally and intellectually.  She has trouble with complex instructions giving to her verbally and have difficulty expressing herself verbally but she can read and chose the right answers to complex questions or problems.  We were told that Cathy has aphasia and perhaps apraxia which is typical as the result of brain injury.  We, as well Cathy believe this condition will improve over time with efforts and therapies.

(Grace) I wanted to supplement my Dad’s bi-weekly report with a little of my own commentary. I will make it short because I know that my Dad keeps everyone up to date on everything that is happening).

This is my last day here in Sacramento and what I have witnessed in the past couple days has been nothing short of amazing. When I left for New York Cathy was still in the ICU and unconscious. When I arrived Friday afternoon and saw her for the first time I was overwhelmed. I ran over to her and burst into tears because I could not believe what I saw; it was Cathy smiling back at me! However, I think that Cathy thought I was a little loony for getting so emotional. There are no words to describe the improvement that she has made in the month and a half that I have been gone.

On my first day here I went with her to the therapy sessions that she had left for the day, which was another three and a half hours! I am so glad that I got to experience a day in the ¡§life of Cathy.¡¨ I told her at the end of the day that she definitely not only works harder than me everyday, but gets more exercise as well. By the end of this experience Cathy will be in better shape than all of us.  However, the big event for this weekend was Cathy’s birthday party that we threw for her on Saturday.

I have spent the past couple weeks in New York finding all of the latest trends and styles to bring back home for Cathy so that she would be the trendiest person in the hospital. So Friday night we gave her some of her presents so that she could choose the perfect outfit for Saturday. She finally decided on a black sundress with a yellow belt to cinch the waist.

On Saturday was Cathy’s day at the spa. I got to the hospital in the morning and brought all of Cathy’s make up and accessories so that she could pick out everything. I think my favorite memory from the weekend was when I asked her if she wanted me to tweeze her eyebrows, and she said back to me in the loudest voice I heard from her all weekend, ¡§YES!¡¨. So after her shower we tweezed, put on make up and accessorized. She made doubly sure that me and my Mom had brought shoes to match the dress. In the end she looked beautiful and you could tell that she was so happy getting all dressed up.

Several of Cathy’s friends from high school came to decorate the day room with balloons, streamers and confetti so that it would be fit for a party. Then we all ate Chinese food and a delicious chocolate cake that Cathy picked out herself.  A number of Cathy’s co-interns at UCDMC also came to visit during and after the party and that just made the day more cheerful for Cathy.

In the end I am sad to go and wish I could be here and be a part of Cathy’s progress and daily trials, but I am so glad that she is doing so well and that she and my parents have the support and prayers of such great friends. This support is evident from the second you step into Cathy’s room, which is filled with flowers, cards, pictures, balloons and banners that have been sent.
