Must Be Present To Win Drawing
Dan Davis was present to win the
drawing this week.
Cathy Liu Update from Jen
Dear friends,
Cathy has made tremendous progress during last two weeks. She passed the critical swallow test on
last Friday (8/17) morning and had her first meal through mouth at
Cathys
vocal chords were also examined during the same swallow test last Friday. Her left vocal chord is sluggish but
doctor felt that it may recover without treatments and gave her language/speech
therapist permission to push her voice.
After a few days of training, Cathy can now communicate with us verbally
in limited fashion. Her voice is
more like a whisper, faint but audible.
We have
always believed that Cathy can still read and her language therapist proved that
by taking her through a series of tests. One such test is to show her a picture
that is ambiguous then let her pick the correct sentence that best describe the
picture amongst a number of other sentences that also give close descriptions.
Cathy has started reading the latest Harry Potter book sent by her friends
mother few pages each day during breaks.
Her
occupational and physical therapists have done wonders. Cathy can now walk slowly with minimum
assistance for about 50 yards before having to rest for awhile. She walked up and down a flight of stairs
with a therapists support last Tuesday (8/21).
A couple of her rehab. doctors
happened to be in the vicinity and watched her during the exercise. They were all impressed by Cathys
aggressiveness and determination as she did not take half steps but full steps
with one foot overlapping the other every time.
Cathys right arm is a big challenge as expected. We have seen improvements but it is very
slow compared to other areas. Her
occupational therapists devote a good portion of each session just on her right
arm and right shoulder.
We are
with Cathy for about 20 hours each day since she was injured. Her injury is server and she exhibits
deficiencies in some areas but our observation is that Cathy is still our Cathy.
She retained her will, determination, intelligence and even her tolerance on bad
jokes. I told her last Tuesday that one of the treatment under consideration by her doctor is to inject Botox on her left vocal chord to close up the gap. It is similar to the kind of treatment
that some ladies go through for fuller and sexier lips. I told her that she will have a sexier
voice in the future should her doctor decide that a Botox
treatment is necessary. That joke
got a big laugh out of her that I have not seen for a long time.
