President Daryl opened the meeting, requesting that Steve
Greenwood lead the pledge. He then asked
Jim Patterson to give the invocation, which he did, likening the perseverance
of the solders on the Second World War to that needed by the members in putting
on the Harvest Festival.
First it should be reported that Andy Farrar did take notes for me
at the August 14th meeting.
We just had a problem with email.
My spam blocker didn’t recognize the computer he emailed them from so I
didn’t receive them. We will try it
again next week, when I have to take a deposition in Ely, Nevada. Jim is having his second eye worked on Monday
and so will not be seeing well enough to do the notes. Anyway, on the 14th, the same culprits did the pledge and invocation, with comments on the evils of horse racing. |

not time yet, but with Penny leaving the club due to her new job, we need a new
chairman of the Christmas Party. Dave Mulqueeney volunteered.
We will try not to mention it again until November.
We
received a thank you letter from Durham High School for our donation to the
Safe and Sober graduation party.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
Jane Ziad reports that the Membership Committee has met and is
making plans to raise the membership to 50 members. More later.
CATHY LIU
From her father:
Cathy
has started her therapy sessions 3 hours a day. She has aphasia and is
not vocal yet but can communicate with us clearly via lips movement like YES
and NO.
She just had an exam on her vocal chords and the technician
felt optimistic on what she saw but we'll have to wait for the words from
doctors. She is no longer in critical condition so I plan to send updates
like every other week then eventually taper
off at sometime. I know you guys are all care and praying for her but I don't
think
it's appropriate for Cathy and us to have a permanent presence in Club's news letter.
From
another source (her boyfriend):
She
has done much better since the bone flap was replaced. The weekend before last
weekend, some of her friends from Emory came out to visit her, she was still a
little bit tired from the surgery and the events that had taken place; however,
Cathy's spirits seemed to be uplifted by their presence. She has been able to
recognize virtually everyone since the bone flap surgery and seems to
comprehend most everything that is being said. Her family and friends took her
for a stroll in her wheelchair and Cathy was able to get some fresh air
outside. … Cathy has gone from tearing
up when sat in the chair to now walking with assistance. Her right leg still
drags but her balance has improved and she is working hard at improving her
right side's movement. She has been very motivated. Cathy cannot talk with her
voice yet. She continues to improve her vocabulary with lip movement. She
communicates 'yes' and 'no' answers with hand signals. It seems like she is
close to being completely there mentally, but mental and physical capabilities
are not connecting to function properly. Her vocal chords, body movements, and
speech will just have to take time to connect. This last week, Cathy had a big
break through in that she is now able to swallow. She is now being fed solid
foods and drinking thickened liquids. The feeding tube is now removed and she
appears much more comfortable. Cathy needs to build up her appetite again. She
has lost a lot of weight and muscle tone.
And
a third source (a friend):
Kira and I went down to the hospital at 5:30 tonight.
When we got there Cathy's mom told her she had visitors and upon walking in the
room Cathy gave us the BIGGEST smile! It was such an amazing feeling! She
mouthed the word HI to us (she still can't speak) and was SOOO happy. We stayed
at the hospital for over an hour talking to her and Brian, and discussing all
the things that had been going on and the things we had yet to do together.
Cathy looks exactly the same, just with a short haircut. She is wearing
a stocking cap while her stitches are still healing, but Kira
brought some cute baseball caps for her to wear while she's in the hospital so
her head doesn't get cold.
While we were there Cathy also had dinner. She ate almost EVERYTHING on
her plate! She's been on real food for almost a week and doing really well
eating everything. She just looked so happy to have people visiting her and
talking to her.
I can't even tell you all how amazed I am at the power of prayer. I
feel that I am blessed to have so many people around me who are praying for
Cathy in this trying time. I can't believe the improvement I've seen in Cathy
every time I've been to the hospital. I really can't even explain the
excitement I feel right now knowing that Cathy is going to get better and
better and better!!!
RECOGNITIONS
On the 14th Glenn
Pulliam was recognized for his 26th wedding anniversary by contributing $26.
Then Andy and
Dianne Farrar annouced that they will have been married 50 years in two more
days, so contibuted $50. Dave Mulqueeney
gave a short lecture on golfing a “hole in one” and pad $10 for the honor.
This week, Dave
Mulqueeney contributed $37 for his 37th anniversary. He stated: “It has been worth every dime of
it”. He wanted to make sure I reported that so Chris will see it when she reads
the Rowel. President Daryl had to be
reminded he was having a birthday this week.
He volunteered $10 for the recognition.
PROGRAM
Andy Farrar presented
Dr. Mark Lundberg from the Butte County
Public Health speaking on the West Nile Virus.
Essentially, while the press has made something out of it, it is not
among the more serious problems in the County.
80% of those exposed to it will develop an immunity to it, but will not
have symptoms. Of the 20% that do get
sick, they will recover. Less that 1%
develop the serious neuro invasive version, and most
of those will recover. Use a good
mosquito repellant.
Must Be Present To Win
Drawing
Todd Kimmelshue was present to win the
drawing this week. Andy won it on the 14th
and donated it back to the club.
