President Daryl opened the meeting, I assume.  I assume he also asked someone to lead the Flag Salute and offer the invocation.

I wasn’t present at the meeting, due to an important neighborhood meeting.

Jim Kirks had his eyes worked on and couldn’t take notes.  So this Rowel will be more like the ones I fake while in Cabo San Lucas in May.

FUTURE MEETINGS:

August 21st:   Andy Farrar will present a speaker from Butte County Public Health speaking on the West Nile Virus.

August 28th:   Roy Ellis

September 4th:  No Meeting.

September 11th:  Harvest Festival Preparation at the Durham Park.

September 16th:  The Harvest Festival.  All must attend.

September 18th:  No meeting (the Harvest Festival was the meeting of record).

September 25th:  Harvest Festival Club Assembly

January 29th:  Dar Meyer will present  Kim Schafer, daughter of Walt Schafer.

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

I hope there were some.  I assume who ever was visiting was introduced by some members.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CATHY LIU

Dear friends,                                                                        Friday, August 10th, 2007

Cathy is officially in the rehabilitation ward of UCD Medical Center as of tonight at 6:30pm.  Occupational and physical therapists started working with her on last Saturday.  She started out with just sitting on the edge of her bed and ended up with standing on her own feet on Wednesday with helps from her therapists.  She was under a lot of stress during those sessions but she was determined to give them her best.

Cathy had what we hoped her last surgery yesterday.  Neurosurgeons replaced the piece of bone flap they removed from her skull during one of  the surgeries on the first day.  It was done in order to relief the pressure on her brain caused by internal bleeding.  The operation on her bone flap replacement was in the morning and was successful.  That same afternoon,  the surgeon who participated in all her surgeries came to evaluate her recovery and told us that he was surprised by the progress she had made.  He also told us that the neurosurgical team had a debate when they first saw her a month ago.  They debated whether they should treat her at all due to the extensive head injury Cathy arrived in.  This little bit of disclosure brought us right back to the reality.

We were told that Cathy¡¦s rehabilitation program will start in earnest on next Monday.  She will have one hour of occupational, one hour of physical and one hour of language therapy daily, Monday through Saturday.  Depending on various factors, her in-patient rehabilitation period could range anywhere from two weeks to six months.  Her out-patient rehabilitation period could be twelve to eighteen months.

We can feel Cathy’s sorrow on occasions but it doesn’t take much to brighten her up whether it is the card you sent or the photos with you in them.  We are grateful that Cathy is still with us.  We know that she has challenges ahead but we are confident that she will continue to surprise us with her determination, your support and your prayers.

Thank you,

Jen, Pam and Grace

HARVEST FESTIVAL

The LAST monthly meeting of the Harvest Festival Committee will be on Thursday, September 13, 2007.  The meeting will be at the Italian Cottage on the Skyway, at 7:00 a.m.  All committee chairpersons and sub-chairpersons MUST be present. This is it.  All final plans must be made.

HARVEST FESTIVAL OPPORTUINTY DRAWING TICKETS

There are five team captains with five Durham Rotarians on each team. Each Rotarian will receive 40 Harvest Festival Opportunity Drawing tickets. Tickets are $5.00 each. There are discounted prices for multiple tickets such as 20 tickets for $35.00. The tickets were handed out at the Aug. 14th meeting.  For those who were not there, you will get them at the August 21st meeting.  GET THEM SOLD!

Harvest Festival Sponsorships

At the committee meeting this week, Steven L. Greenwood reported that we are still behind in getting all the sponsors signed up.  It is important that you immediately contact the sponsors you are responsible for and get them signed up.  See the sponsor list, Steve sent to all of you.  We have a deadline for printing the T-Shirts.  PLEASE DO IT NOW!  We are still short of sponsors, which means less money for scholarships.

District 5160 Foundation Day

Rotary Foundation Day at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday, October 6, 2007. Includes Keynote Address by Past RI President Rajendra K. Saboo (1991-92), Silent Auction, and more.  Park Opens Early, at 8:30 am, for Rotarians and Guests for Special Foundation Program including Rotary Project Exhibits.

RECOGNITIONS

Andy had an anniversary last Friday, so maybe Daryl recognized him for it this week.  If not, he can do it along with his own birthday next week.

PROGRAM

Andy Farrar presented Richard Fields who spoke about the Pacific Legal Foundation.  Since I wasn’t there, I don’t know what the subject of his talk was, so I cheated and copied the following from their web page, so as to further explain what the Foundation is and does (It is not intended as an endorsement or non-endorsement, since the Rowel must remain apolitical):

“Founded in 1973, Pacific Legal Foundation is the oldest and largest public interest legal organization dedicated to limited government, property rights and individual liberty.

·         Liberty In Crisis!
Conceived in pain over 200 years ago, America still stands as “the land of freedom.” It is still, by far, the greatest country in the world to live in. But there are tarnishes that have formed and need to be removed. Though the great principles of our Founding Fathers remain with us, many of their hard-fought protections are eroding due to a form of tyranny engendered by overzealous bureaucracies, government red tape, ignorance or indifference of our courts and elected officials, and a complex maze of laws and regulations that are strangling our personal and professional lives.

Today’s government abuses are of a kind and magnitude not confronted by the Founders of this nation. The abuses of the English monarchy, which gave rise to the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, were often sudden and violent. Today in America they are subtle and incremental, yet just as devastating in their effect.

Voices That Will Not Be Silenced
Until about 30 years ago, individual Americans were without an effective voice in the courts to speak out on their behalf against the representatives of centralized control and group based special interests. Common sense and balance were concepts without a forum, and individual and economic liberties were the unintended victims of that void. The result: increased government intrusion in our lives, regulatory infringements on private property and individual rights and assaults on free enterprise.

On March 5, 1973, government regulators and environmental extremists found a foe, mainstream Americans found a friend; liberty in America found new meaning. On that day, Pacific Legal Foundation was established turning the voices that wouldn’t be heard into the voices that couldn’t be silenced. Since then, PLF has filled the void and has proven itself as a potent representative in the courts for Americans who have grown weary of overregulation by big government, overindulgence by the courts, and excessive interference in the American way of life.”

Must  Be Present To Win Drawing

I don’t know who was or was not present to win the drawing.  Probably me, since I wasn’t there.
