President Daryl opened the meeting and led the Flag Salute.  Jim Patterson offered the invocation.  The meeting moved right into the program because the K-9s needed to get home.  See “Program” below.

I wasn’t present at the meeting, however, contrary so some speculation, it wasn’t because of the subject of my “editorial” last week.  I attended an annual barbeque in the triangle “park” between Park Vista and Carol Avenues in my neighborhood for National Night Out.  I understand that things were quieter this week.  Maybe it was the presence of the K-9s.

Thanks to Jim Kirks for taking notes.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CATHY LIU

August 3rd, 2007

Dear friends,

Cathy has made remarkable progress since our last update.  She was more alert and awake after the removal of her breathing tube and neck collar.  Last Saturday (7/28), Cathy's day shift asked Cathy to squeeze her hand which she did then, after a short pause, she let go of nurse's hand and reached over to her right, picked up Pam's hand and gave it a strong squeeze.  I believe she would have reached for me first had I not been at the other end of her bed giving her a foot massage.  That same afternoon, she raised her index finger followed by her middle finger after Pam asked her to show two fingers.  This is her first proof to us that she can follow simple instructions and make connection with us.  We were elated but kept it to ourselves.

In the following days, Pam taught her about all her fingers by touching when she was awake.   On Tuesday afternoon, she lifted her left forearm with her hand in a fist then raised her thumb, index finger in sequence until all fingers were raised then proceeded to lower those fingers in sequence back into a fist.  All these were in slow motion.  She did the same for Brian that night when Brian came to visit her.  Brain was beside himself and we were giving high fives to one another over her bed then, the most remarkable thing happened.  About 30 seconds later, she raised her left hand again, did her five fingers trick all by herself.  I was very touched by what she did.  I believe she's telling us that she knew what was going on and tried to cheer us up.

Cathy received her first and could be the last pay check from UCD Medical Center on Thursday.  Her department chair delivered it personally.  Cathy was awake at the time and reached out for it.  Occupational therapist, speech pathologist and physical therapist started their evaluations on Cathy on Thursday one after the other.  Cathy was not able to show them much but they were all happy to see the efforts and cooperation.  She was transferred out of ICU to a step down unit on that night.  The new room is private, a lot quieter and more spacious than the room she had in ICU and she slept better after the transfer.

We brought Cathy some of the greeting cards we received from you today.  We started out reading to her but she had shown such an interest in them, we handed her some of them still in the opened envelop.  She carefully fished them out using her left hand with minimum assistance from Pam.  She flipped them open and looked at the content of the cards.  We believe that she was actually reading them.  The time she spent between flipping them open and closing is proportional to the content written in the card.  On one card, she started from the center fold for a brief moment then flipped the left page over because the greeting started on the other side of the left page.  She must have found out that the text on the center fold did not make sense without some leading messages.  On two occasions, We deliberately took the cards from her after she flipped them open.  We turned the cards up-side-down without her noticing then handed them back to her.  She was able to turn them right-side-up before reading them.  It might be our wishful thinking but we think she can still read.

Consider what happened to Cathy four weeks ago and the condition she was in when we first found her,  Cathy¡¦s current condition and her responsiveness are nothing but a miracle to us.  Cathy has a long and arduous road ahead of her.  She still can not swallow, can not make a sound, immobile on her right side but we believe she is gaining ground with her will, your support and your prayer.  We want to thank you all whole heartedly.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Daryle announced that KR Robertson and Chris Hatch had birthdays in August. They were recognized for $10.00 each.

PROGRAM

Bruce Miller introduced Will Brewton, Dave Kereazis, Dave Ennes, and Tracy Panuke of the Butte County Sheriff’s K-9 unit.

Will Brewton told Durham Rotarians that there are five dogs in the County Sheriff’s K-9 corps. The dogs have been trained for fight work and narcotics searches. The dogs cost $7,000.00. The K-9 unit can raise funds for a dog and the Sheriff will pay for the training.

Today, most of the dogs in the unit are imported from Europe. Belgian Malmenois are being purchased as they live longer and have less health problems than German Shepherds.

The K-9 corps has worked with the Butte County Narcotics Team. Heroin, marijuana, meth, and cocaine have been found in the County jail at various times during the past two years when random searches are conducted. In some cases tips that drugs are in a certain unit of the jail are phoned in and the handlers and their dogs are immediately dispatched to the jail and often find narcotics based on the telephone tip.

Durham Rotarians witnessed a demonstration of the dogs’ ability to chase and subdue individuals and their ability to sniff out narcotics.

Dogs that are raised in Europe as taught commands in the language of the country where they are born. Will Brewton’s dog is given commands in Dutch because it is easier for the handler to learn the Dutch language commands. It would be much more time consuming to try to retain the dog to obey commands in English.

The Rotarians had many questions and gave Bruce Miller and the K-9 corps a big round of applause for an excellent program.
