REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:
CATHY LIU
July 28, 2007
Dear friends,
We are showered by your kindness, well wishes and prayers
in the last three weeks and I believe your prayers have been answered.
Despite a few minor setbacks, we have nothing but good news
to report. Neurosurgeon team removed
Cathy’s ventricle catheter and staples on Monday then, brain monitor on Tuesday
as they believed that they have her brain pressure, oxygen and temperature
under control. Intervention Radiology
team did the last Transcranial Doppler scan on Cathy
on Wednesday, evaluated the result then declared vasospasm is no longer a
concern. On Thursday, Cathy underwent a
MRI scan on her neck. Medical teams knew
Cathy does not have a bone fracture in her neck by earlier X-Rays and CT scans
but they wanted to make sure that there are no soft tissue and ligament
injuries. They wanted to do that earlier
but was prevented by the monitor in her brain as it is a device with metallic
components. All these activities
happened while medical teams were weaning her away from reliance on medicine
and oxygen support. She stayed calm and
strong and had probably the best 3 consecutive days of her hospital stay so
far.
Cathy was completely off medicine at 6:00am this morning
(Friday, July 27) with the exception of a maintenance IV line and a respirator
on standby. Her eyes were partially open
and were tracking movements on people around her. Her left hand started playing a squeeze ball
we brought for her and her left leg started kicking. She is full of life. Her pulmonary team monitored her all morning
then decided to remove her breathing tube around 12 at noon. I refrained myself from doing a back flip
with joy in her room as this breathing tube is probably the single most irritable
object as far as Cathy is concerned. She
struggled for about two hours after the removal of this tube to overcome the
irritation in her throat and started breathing calmly before falling back to
sleep.
Her other attending neurosurgeon came visit her around
3:00pm this afternoon and commented how good she looks without those breathing
tubes and would look even better without the collar around her neck. I told him that the Radiology team told me
this morning that they can not rule out the ligament damage around her neck
after studying her MRI image taken yesterday.
This attending neurosurgeon, an older gentleman with a thick west
European accent said ¡§Is that so? let me check it out right now!¡¨ and
proceeded to the central nurses¡¦ station in a brisk pace. He spent about 10 minutes there, called the
chief residence over. They discussed for
about a minute then came over and told me that there is nothing wrong with what
radiologist found in the back of Cathy’s neck.
It is probably something swollen caused by laying in bed too long. He signed an order, gave it to Cathy’s
attending nurse and the collar was off in 2 minutes.
Today is exactly 3 weeks to the date Cathy was hit by a
car. So many good things have happened
today and have happened so fast. I set
here trying to figure out what do all these means but decided that this is too
much for me and I can only attribute all the positives to your kindness, your
well wishes and your prayers.

District 5160 Foundation Day
Rotary
Foundation Day at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday, October 6, 2007.
Includes Keynote Address by Past RI President Rajendra
K. Saboo (1991-92), Silent Auction, and more. Park Opens Early, at 8:30 am, for Rotarians
and Guests for Special Foundation Program including Rotary Project Exhibits.
RECOGNITIONS
Roy Ellis auctioned the Grinder. Before doing so, he reported the Comanchi Ride, the construction of his Butte meadows cabin and 2 step daughter’s gradutated. At first the auction didn’t elicit any bids after Jim Edwards opened at $50.00. Apparently, no one is doing anything in August. So it was agreed that it would cover August and September. The bidding then became spirited. Dar offered $60 which was raised by Tom Vanella to $70. Jim Kirks got in the mix with a bid of $110 which Tom raised to $120. It went to Tom.
PROGRAM
The program was the visit of District Governor Stan Smalley. Stan is a
member of the San Ramon Club. He was
here with his wife Marsha. Stan
discussed many things going on this Rotary year. In October will be the Rotary Foundation Day
at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday on October 6, 2007 (see announcement
above). He mentioned that with District
9220 representing Madagascar and five other island countries in the Western
Indian Ocean, we have an incredible

Stan is challenging each
member to do one new thing. He is also
challenging each club to also do one new thing.
He also discussed the
Paul Harris Society (PHS) which is a new level of recognition of Rotarians and
friends who contribute $1,000 or more each fiscal year to the Rotary
Foundation's humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs. He indicated that the $100 sustaining
membership is not the equivalent of the value of $100 at the time it was first
adopted. He suggests that members at
least consider $200 per year.
He noted that Rotary
International’s plan to completely irradiate polio by 2005 was blocked by the
government of Nigeria and Muslim belief that it was a plan to kill their
children. These problems have now been
overcome and Polio Plus is still on its way to completing the irradiation of
polio.

Editorial:
I was
embarrassed that our District Governor had to put up with the noise from
the Butte Creek Country Club members in the next room.
It has been bad enough since they started their “Pasta Night” but
this time they set up table just behind the dividers and were loudly
talking just behind District Governor Stan Smalley.
As President Daryl knows, because I expressed myself to him on the
way out, I left the meeting angry.
I still am!
THIS HAS TO
STOP!
My opinion is
that the Butte Creek Country Club has to move their event to another night
or move us to Wednesday (assuming they do not have an event on that day)
or we move elsewhere. |
