This was a joint meeting with the Chico Rotary Club.  It was a beer, wine, and a sausage dog dinner in the atrium of the Bell Memorial Auditorium at CSUC.  There was no formal opening or closing of the meeting.  Following dinner those attending then moved to the Harlan Adams theatre for a special production of Cabaret by the Court Theatre group

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Most of the members attending had their spouses or significant others as guests.  Those I remember seeing were Jan Wacker, Jan Ellis, Sue Jessen, Linda Vanella, Cindy Price, Clif and Carol Gates, Don Wilson and Sharron Mathans.  Steve Greenwood appeared to have a couple of young ladies with him.  I didn’t see Anne with Daryl.  Now that I have gone out on a limb and named those I remember seeing, I apologize in advance to those I missed.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CATHY LIU

Jen reports that Cathy is under great care and that is the least that he has to worry about.  He indicates that there is much in the way of  advanced medical equipment that monitors her brain and other vital signs.  He is impressed by how speedy medical staff responds to her needs.  She is still critical but her condition has stabilized.  He considers that a miracle.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

The next monthly meeting of the Harvest Festival Committee will be on Thursday, August 16, 2007.  The meeting will be at the Italian Cottage on the Skyway, at 7:00 a.m.  All committee chairpersons must be present.

In is important that you immediately contact the sponsors you are responsible for and get them signed up.  See the sponsor list, Steve sent to all of you.  We have a deadline for printing the T-Shirts.  PLEASE DO IT NOW!

Rotary Club of Durham Foundation – Annual Meeting

The regular annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation was to have been held following the July 10th meeting.  However, a quorum of the Board of Trustees was not present.  The Trustee present ordered it continued to follow the July 24th meeting.  Trustees please be there.  Election of officers for the year must and will be held.

The Bylaws of the Foundation provide that the Board of Trustees consist of the president of Durham Rotary (Daryl Polk), the president-elect (vice president) of Durham Rotary (Glenn Pulliam), the secretary of Durham Rotary (Penny Chennel), the treasurer of Durham Rotary (Steve Plume) and three members at large, who are Phil Price, Roy Ellis and Dar Meyer.  The Bylaws also provide that the secretary and treasurer of the Foundation are the secretary and treasurer of Durham Rotary.  Therefore it is the Chairman of the Board that must be elected at this meeting.  During the past year the president has been Daryl Polk.  Last year Daryl appointed Roy Ellis as Endowment Chairman of the Foundation.

Anyway, we need all seven members of the Board of Trustees to attend following next Tuesday’s meeting.  To repeat that is Daryl Polk, Glenn Pulliam, Penny Chennel, Steve Plume, Phil Price, Roy Ellis and Dar Meyer.

Literacy Month

The Following Message is from John Bernardin, The District 5160 Literacy Chair.

July is Literacy month!

What better way is there to start your Rotary year than to help someone learn to read?

A cooperative agreement between Rotary International and AutoSkill International has made the Academy of Reading and the Academy of Math available to individuals sponsored by a Rotary Club for only $80 for a year (a $160 savings).  Experience with these programs has shown that an individual can learn to read using the Academy of Reading in less than a year using the program for 30 minutes a day four days a week.  Individuals needing some help with math raise their math skills using the Academy of Math.  This is especially helpful for students having difficulty passing the California exit exam in high school.

All that is required is access to a computer with a high speed internet connection.

For information contact John Bernardin, District 5160 Literacy Chair, at 510-223-8274 or at jebernardin@comcast .net

John is also available to speak to your club addressing the Literacy needs of your city/community and he will describe the gains made by students/adults using these programs.

PROGRAM

The program was Cabaret by CSUC Court Theatre.  Having seen the original production on Broadway 39 years ago and having attended Court Theatre productions in the past (thought recently) I was impressed by this production.  The young lady playing the Sally Bowles part was very good for a student.  So was the actress playing Fraulein Schneider.  For a production on a limited stage with a limited cast size, they did quite well.  Of course, it was not at Broadway level, but that wasn’t expected.  The Master of Ceremonies was not Joel Grey, but no one could be.   The important thing about this play is the point it was making.  It may seem to start as a light musical comedy, but it isn’t.  It becomes very serious before it is over (something which was a surprise, because we weren’t expecting it, when we first saw it).  It is about how complacency allowed the NAZI horror to descend upon the world.
