Pres. Andy called the meeting to order. Steve Greenwood gave the invocation and Bill Apger lead the flag salute.

 

 

Missed Meetings

This is a new feature, at the request of President Andy, to assist members in keeping up their attendance.  The following members need to make up this week’s meeting: No list this week.  But if you missed see below for makeups.

May 22nd:   Jen Lui and Roy Ellis will present a Hot ‘Dog Picnic at Durham park with Interact, Camp Royal students and Students of the Month.

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

 

Kent Jackson introduced Chuck Lohse of the Chico Rotary Club. Dan Davis introduced Rick Leland of the Chico Rotary Club and Tom Knowles of the Willows Rotary Club.

 

Roy Ellis announced that his table has the speaker for tonight’s program and we are working on him to become a Durham Rotarian before the end of the meeting. Pres. Andy asked Bruce Miller, Sergeant at Arms, to collect a dollar from each Durham Rotarian at Roy’s table.

 

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

Polio Plus

 

The District is requesting $25.00 per Rotarian to finish off Polio Plus. The District will match 50/50. Durham Rotarians voted to contribute $12.50 per member of Club funds to achieve the match.  The Rowel in two weeks will have more on Rotary’s fight against polio.

 

Carnitas Feed

 

Norm Larson and Steve Greenwood reviewed the past Carnitas Feed expenses and revenue. It was their recommendation that each Durham Rotarian take four tickets for the Carnitas Feed to cover the expenses for the event. The Club voted to accept the recommendation.  The Carnitas Feed is June 5th, in the Park.

 

 

 

ROTARY CLEAN UP DAY

 

Rotary Clean Up Day scheduled for April 28th.  That is this Saturday.  Dave Jessen will lead the group in cleaning up the 4 corners area in Durham so it will clean for the Durham Parade in May.  Please volunteer and show up at 9:00 am in April 28th.  It will last no longer than noon.

 

 

 

HARVEST FESTIVAL

 

 

 

The next monthly meeting of the Harvest Festival Committee will be on Thursday, May 17, 2007.  The meeting will be at the Italian Cottage on the Skyway, at 7:00 a.m.  All committee chairpersons must be present.

 

Steve Greenwood reported that the Durham Rotary web site is updated. Members can download applications for the Harvest Festival Car Show and the Craft Faire. In addition the forms for Harvest Festival sponsors can be downloaded.

 

THE NEXT MEETING

 

Rev. Jim has lined up Richard Carpenter as our speaker for the 8th of May.   Mr. Carpenter is a niche entrepreneur.   Richard modifies vans for accessibility for people using wheelchairs and repairs scooters and other equipment used by the mobility impaired.

 

District Family Fun Day

 

The District Rotary Foundation Family Fun Day will include held on May 5, 2007, from 11 am to 3 pm, at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum, 5848 State Highway 12, Suisun City, CA 94585.   The price is $25 per adult and $15 per child (under 2-free).  It is a western theme so come in your western clothes and bring chairs and blankets.  Also bring money for the silent auction.  Tom Vanella will obtain a case of 4 pound cans at a reasonable price for our clubs donation to the silent auction/raffle.  There will be a BBQ picnic, music, raffle prizes, a bounce house, a silent auction and train rides. 

 

The Western Railway Museum gives visitors the opportunity to ride historic streetcars and interurban electric trains from all over California and other western states. Streetcars loop the shaded picnic grounds. Interurban cars run over the restored main line of the old Sacramento Northern Railway. With over 50 historic cars on display, railway exhibits, the Museum Store and Gift Shop and the large, shaded picnic grounds, the Western Railway Museum is ideal for family and group outings

Rotary Foundation Fundraiser in Redding

 

Pres. Andy has received beautiful engraved invitations from the Redding Rotary Club. He circulated the invitations to the Moonlight on the River Gala, Saturday, June 30, 2007 among the members.This elegant affair entitled “Moonlight On The River” will be held on the Sun Dial Bridge and Turtle Bay Arboretum, in Redding, on Saturday, June 30, 2007, beginning at 6:30 p.m.  You will be sipping champagne while strolling on the Sundial bridge and having dinner in the garden patio, as the sun is setting and the moon is rising overhead.  It will be put on by the Redding and Anderson Clubs jointly.  It will include a gourmet dinner, part 2 of the raffle ticket drawing, silent auction, music and much more.  The price will be $125 per person or $1500 fpr a table of 8.  Reservation details will be forthcoming soon!  For more information contact Marlene Woodard, Event Coordinator at 244-4320 or office@aplannedaffair.net.

 

Joint Club Social Event of Chico Rotary and Chico Sunrise Rotary Clubs

 

Monday, May 21, 2007 at 1:00 pm with a shotgun start, at Canyon Oaks Country Club.  $90 for green fees, cart, range balls, prizes and Pasta Night Dinner following Golf (BBQ hamburger lunch included).  $25 for dinner only.  Call Ray Block – 879-4228 or Hugh Mattingly – 895-7552.

 

International Convention

 

The Rotary International Convention will be Sunday 06/17/07 09:00am - Wednesday 06/20/07 09:00pm in Salt Lake City.  The Rotary convention, often compared to a mini-United Nations conference, will attract Rotary club members from around the world to the state-of-the-art Salt Palace Convention Center. Rotary conventions held in the United States typically draw about 25,000 registrants.

 

RECOGNITIONS

 

Pres. Andy asked if any members had new grandchildren? Steve Plume announced the birth of a healthy grandson, Justin Wyatt. Also Steve spoke about how we treat veterans. Sometimes we discriminate against veterans without thinking. Steve urged that we bend over backwards and give veterans the benefit of the doubt. Steve was recognized for $100 and rang the bell.

 

Pres. Andy spoke about how much he respected the warrant officers who plucked the wounded out of a hail of bullets on the battlefield.

 

Pres. Andy asked Jim Edwards "Is it that you would rather come up by yards rather than inches? $49.00 will bring you up to the rest of the fellows. Or would you rather round it up to $50.00?"   Jim responded that he could spell forty-nine. Jim then rang the bell.

 

 

PROGRAM

 

Clint Goss introduced Bruce Enyeart, Chair of the Agriculture,/Environmental Sciences/Welding Department of Butte College. Bruce teaches mechanized agriculture and heavy equipment operation. He presented an interesting PowerPoint program showing how Butte College is a wildlife refuge. Butte College is partnering with CSU, Chico on Sustainability. Bruce showed how he is sharing his over 40 years of experience in operating farm equipment with students at Butte College.
