HARVEST FESTIVAL

The next monthly meeting of the Harvest Festival Committee will be on Thursday, March 15, 2007.  THAT IS NEXT THURSDAY!  The meeting will be at the Italian Cottage on the Skyway, at 7:00 a.m.  All committee chairpersons must be present.

District Family Fun Day

The District Family Fun Day will include a visit to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Suisun City.  The District has asked for each club to donate to a raffle.  Tom Vanella will obtain a case of 4 pound cans at a reasonable price.  When it is, is still a mystery.  There still is no information on the Fun Day on the District’s web page.

International Convention

In spite of President Andy’s understandable disagreement with the mayor of Salt Lake City, we must announce that the Rotary International Convention will be Sunday 06/17/07 09:00am - Wednesday 06/20/07 09:00pm in Salt Lake City.  The Rotary convention, often compared to a mini-United Nations conference, will attract Rotary club members from around the world to the state-of-the-art Salt Palace Convention Center. Rotary conventions held in the United States typically draw about 25,000 registrants.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Andy was having so much trouble finding something the recognize some member for that Steve Greenwood volunteered to be recognized  early for his anniversary, which is later in the month.  He contributed $25 for his 25 years of marriage.

President Andy noted that Kent Jackson had hardly be recognized at all this year.  Kent said that was because all he has been doing was taking care of people.  Andy talked him into contributing $100 for the year.  Kent demanded that the bell be rung.  President Andy confessed that he had left the bell in his other car and contributed $10 for not having the bell.

PROGRAM

Jim Edwards introduced Sr. Marie Moran.  Sr. Moran and  Rosie Santian rent a house on Norm Larson’s Troxel orchard.  Sr. Moran was born in Ireland and after the meeting she and Chico Club member Mike Moran were comparing notes.  She told of her years in Columbia, where she initially met Rosie, a native of Columbia.  Later they met again in Chico, where Marie was updating her nursing skills at Enloe and Rosie was taking courses at Chico State.   While here they were asked to take care of Jim Edward’s parents during their final years.  They have remained in Chico providing that kind of care to others.  With the money they earn and money we have given them they return to Columbia every year and provide assistance to people in need there.  Marie also supports a number of Columbian children in high school and college.  This has been our International Project for several years.

Must  Be Present To Win Drawing

The cage was misplaced and Clint could not find it, so there was no drawing this week.

(The following is from Bill Hollingshead, Polio Eradication Chairman, 2007/2008 & 2006/2007 Rotary District 5160 and Davis Rotary - Davis, CA)

"2007 - Year of Polio Awareness" Resolution Passed in the U.S. House and Senate

(Washington, DC)—Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a polio survivor, secured a victory for America's children and polio survivors in response to concern about the global resurgence of polio. H.Res.526, Rothman's resolution to designate October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007 as the "Year of Polio Awareness," passed unanimously in the House of Representatives. The resolution also recognizes the need to vaccinate every child in America against polio. Rep. Rothman's bill passed the U.S. Senate later in a companion bill co-sponsored by Senator Jon Corzine (D-NJ).

"While many Americans believe that Polio has been eradicated worldwide, that is simply not true. Thousands of new cases were reported, including six in the United States. That is why I am fighting to bring national attention to the rise in polio cases and to ensure that parents understand the importance of vaccinating our own children against this still-present and paralyzing virus," said Rothman.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that 10% of U.S. children under three, which is about one million toddlers, are not vaccinated against Polio.

"I hope that the passage of this resolution will accomplish our goal of raising awareness of the importance of having every child vaccinated against polio, and will have the effect of allowing doctors to understand this post-polio sequelae syndrome, which is that after someone has lived a whole lifetime with polio, they then suffer a series of additional complications: chronic overwhelming fatigue, joint pain, and chronic pain of a variety of natures".

With the rise in international travel and the resurgence of polio abroad, health officials are concerned about an outbreak in the United States.

Dr. Richard Bruno, internationally-recognized polio expert and director of The Post-Polio Institute at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, posed the following question: "Since the poliovirus can be carried silently by people who show no symptoms, what happens if a polio-infected child lands in a densely-populated city like New York, where an estimated 23,000 toddlers are unvaccinated? Answer: America's next polio epidemic."

Just a personal note:  My sister-in-law suffers from the post-polio sequelae syndrome discussed above.  She contracted polio as a teenager, while she and Cindy slept in the same bed.  Cindy was quarantined for a period of time, but never got polio.  Charlie was an RN working in a hospital most of her adult life, but returning weakness in her legs forced her to retire.  Her ability to walk is now severely limited.
