REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

THE NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be the Crab Feed this Saturday, January 27th.  It is a meeting of record.  All members must be present, not only because you should be present at a meeting, but because your help is needed for this important fundraiser.  More below.

There will be NO MEETING on January 30th, because the Crab Feed takes the place of this meeting date.

The next meeting after the Crab Feed will be February 6th, at the BCCC.

CRAB FEED

The Durham Rotary Crab Feed is Saturday, January 27th. All members will be assigned a task.  The work schedule is repeated again at the end of this Rowel.  Please check what you are scheduled for and be there on time.  If any member cannot attend, let Chris know, to be assigned a pre-event task.

Chris Hatch advised that all tickets need to be sold because the cost of crab and shrimp has increased significantly.  So get to work and sell them.  The menu will be the same as last year.  The tickets are $35.00 each.  This has become our second most important fundraiser.  But it is important that all the tickets be sold.  The profit is on the last tickets sold.

PAUL HARRIS SOCIETY

Pres. Andy asked if members knew what the Paul Harris Society is. He indicated that it is meeting at the Benicia Yacht Club. It includes Rotarians who donate $1,000.00 per year to the Paul Harris Foundation.

Rotary Ski Challenge

The Roitary Club of Tahoe City presents the 31st Annual Dick Linkey Rotary Ski Challenge on Friday, March 2, 2007.  They tout this as the largest gathering of skiing Rotarians in the world.  For more information go to their web site at:  www.tahoecityrotary.org.  The completed registration package must be completed and delivered to them by February 23, 2007.   They also mentioned their Tahoe Cup Challenge at the Coyote Moon Golf Course on June 14, 2007.  Register for this at: www.tcgolf,golfreg.com.

RECOGNITIONS

Pres. Andy called on Daryl Polk. He asked Daryl about his family and how proud he was of them. Daryl responded that he has four daughters in college. One is in England working on a Masters in English, one is at San Jose State University, one is at CSU Chico, and one is a senior at High School and attending Butte College. He has another daughter in High School and his youngest daughter is in Junior High School. Daryl donated $50.00 in recognition of his outstanding family.

Pres. Andy called on Kent Jackson who said he had nothing going on. Pres. Andy replied that a void is very costly. Kent offered $10, but it was turned down. Kent then offered $40 and it was accepted for the recognition.

KR was the last to be recognized by Pres. Andy.  KR responded with "KR Class of 85 excused." He claimed that he worked all week and barely had enough funds to get back across the bridge. He explained that his wife Sharon is working hard to support the homestead. Pres. Andy learned that KR had recently sold his 65 Mustang to his son.  KR claimed he lost money on the deal. However, Pres. Andy recognized KR for $65 and explained that he was trying to help KR become a double or even a triple bell ringer.

PROGRAM

Pres. Andy introduced KR as the program chair for tonight’s meeting. KR immediately introduced El Jefe who announced that once every 20 years the Durham Rotary Club passes on its Service above Self Award. Bruce Norlie has justified Service above Self from an early age. He was directing traffic on El Camino Real in Redwood City at age 3. Bruce explained that his father worked where ever carpentry jobs were available and there was work at that time in Redwood City.

Then the family moved to Stirling City. Bruce at an early age could identify the trucks in this logging community by sound of the engines and horns. Also, Bruce would only eat peanut butter.

When the family moved to Chico, Bruce attended a 2-room school located at the site of what is now John McManus Elementary School. Bruce continued getting his education in Chico and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Chico State.

Bruce met Peg at a teenage dance. It was love at first sight and now they have been married over 40 years.

Bruce patented a machine for baggage handling at the then new Sea-Tac Airport. Bruce went on to explain the difference between a # 1 and a # 2 baggage handler. A # 1 destroys the contents of the bag and one can tell this by looking at the bag. A # 2 destroys the contents of the bag but one can’t tell by looking at the bag.

Then Bruce moved on to Norfield Industries, where he has remained until his retirement today.

During this time Bruce formed a group of chief executives of industries in the area. He was one of the founders of CEPCO.

In 1979 Bruce was Treasurer of the Durham Rotary Club and noticed that there was no money in the treasury. Peg suggested holding a craft fair to raise funds. There were 25 crafters at the first Harvest Festival. The next year Lindey Robinson and Greg Scot had a tub of hot water, hot dogs and a TV to watch football games at the Harvest Festival. Then it was decided to have a pancake breakfast. Next the Capt. Bob Pancake Wagon was added to the scene when the County Sheriff was a member of the Durham Rotary Club.

Next old tractors were added and then the antique car show, and later the Kirshner Wildlife exhibit. All through the years, Peg & Bruce guided the Harvest Festival. Then they decided that others in the Durham Rotary should take over this important event. It is now run by multiple committees.

In his spare time, Bruce rebuilt a 1932 Ford roadster and restored a Skicraft fiberglass boat with a 1960 Ford V8 engine. He enjoys making furniture and designing homes which his brother-in-law have built for them in Chico and at Lake Almanor.

Bruce has served on many boards for community groups. Now he is President of the Far West Heritage Association which operates the Patrick Ranch and Chico Museum.

Suddenly, El Jefe announced "Bruce enjoys cross dressing." The club suddenly became very attentive. Bruce responded that he has shown up at work as Capt. Silver, an eagle, Capt. Kirk and even Minnie Pearl. During the last 12 months he has planned with his wife Peg what character to appear as at monthly Norlie Industry meetings. Not only is the costume planned in detail, there is music to set the stage for Bruce to come into the meeting room to have fun and get the group to think outside the box.

Among the awards that Bruce has received are recognition by the State of California, Leadership in Industry Award, the Pat Lapin and the Web Awards from the Chico Chamber of Commerce.

El Jefe presented Bruce with a jar of peanut butter as a symbolic award from Durham Rotarians. KR told Bruce that a plaque for his office is in the works.

Bruce was invited to say a few words. When Peg became Durham correspondent for the Enterprise-Record, Bruce became aware of the Durham community. By joining Durham Rotary he became part of the Durham community. Their sons Erin and Eric attended Durham schools. It has been very enjoyable, but now he is transitioning and will be spending much time at Lake Almanor. Bruce asked Norm Larson if there was any office space at Golden Valley Bank as they don’t want him any longer at Norfield Industries and Peg doesn’t want him at home all the time. Bruce thanked the Club for the recognition. Then he asked if members should be recognized for not having a badge to wear as he was wearing his badge and so was Pres. Andy.

Club members asked Pres. Andy "Where’s the bell." That ended the discussion about the badges.

Must  Be Present To Win Drawing

No drawing tonight.

Thank you to Jim Kirks

Jim Kirks took notes for me at this meeting (I was only in Yreka on business, Andy).  Thank you Jim.  The rearranging of the order of the notes, and the meeting as you may remember it, to fit my usual Rowel format was all mine.
